Meghalaya Day Song Road to Fifty by Shri Subir S Sangma

The peace in the State of Assam was disturbed when the State decided to impose Assamese Language as the State Language using the official Language Bill on 18th October 1960 threatening the tribes who were apprehensive of losing culture and identity. The imposition of Assamese Language is the sole reason for the fight of separate Statehood. It was Late Williamson A Sangma who accelerated the movement successfully. He lead the sustained struggle by the Garos,Khasis and Jaintias. The movement was firmed but peaceful agitation. And finally demand for seperate Statehood for Meghalaya was conceded and the State came into existence on 21st January 1972 with Captain Williamson A Sangma as the first Chief Minister of the State.
Meghalaya is a beautiful State. With its pristine mountains, winding rivers and greenery everywhere. A landlocked territory, it is bounded on a north by the State of Assam and on the south and west by Bangladesh. The name Meghalaya was coined by Geographer S.P.Chatterjee which means " abode of Clouds" in Sanskrit.
