Meguiars x Cooled Collective Collboration - "Finding the Perfect Reflection" Poster

I hope all of you have been well during this wondrous year! I am so excited to bring you guys a project I have been working on for a few months with the sponsorship of Meguiar's. They came to me with a new series where they are working with various artists in supporting their passions.
I was fortunate enough to be picked on the photography side of things and when they approached me with creating a poster of "Find the Perfect Reflection", well I was extremely excited and honored.
At first, two concepts came to mind but were very cliche. First off was a reflection of the paint of a car that had been freshly detailed and the second is a water reflection. I wanted to create something that had been done before but put my spin on it.
After a week or so of dwelling it over, I had settled on having a stock late model stock GT3 and a reflection of an older aircooled with some racing soul in the puddle. The additional spin was that the sky and buildings would be in hyper Synth 80s tones but that ended up becoming a mission after our initial shoot.
I had to deal with hurdle after hurdle that day and the "simple" idea started to become a fading memory. First off, with the recent Dodgers/Lakers championships, the land was littered with trash everywhere. We started to kick all of the debris but with broken glass everywhere, it was gonna take some time to clean it up properly. Luckily Ravi who came to witness the shoot took the initiative to find some of the local film crews to let us borrow some brushes and a gas-powered blower.
Second of all, the major gut shot was that there was no flat land that allowed water to pool together. The entire area was sloped to keep the water flowing and with the 18 gallons that I brought along with me, well that was all just flowing away with my hopes and dreams. No matter what we did to keep the water together, it just keeps finding its way downstream. My hope was to shoot the reflection in sections and stitch them together in post but I knew it would be difficult to do well.
On top of that, we had a massive freight train stop right in the middle of the shoot and just park it there for the rest of the night. That sealed the deal for me trying to get the skyline as the sun was setting for the backplate but when life deals you lemons, I make lemonade and lemonade I made. I started to collect pieces of the LA skyline along with the 1st Street Bridge so that I can later composite them together.
I was still hopeful that I could produce a high quality poster that I originally imagined. A long late afternoon filled with lots of disappointments but the fight isn't over just yet. Stay tuned...

Seeing how the sausage is made is not always glamorous but shows the hard work and on set creativity when faced with challenges. Loved this video and seeing what went into that amazing poster! Keep up the amazing work Drew!🙌🏼
