just wanted to clarify my point about Anthony Horowitz - when i said "i don't know what I make of it" i didn't mean i don't know whether I agree with the opinions that those allegations would suggest as OBVIOUSLY not - I more meant I wasn't sure if these allegations would mean I personally wouldn't read any more of his books. of course it's always a personal decision where to separate the art from the artist and i'm sure there's many authors I have a hard no for that others still read, but I think this is still an important discussion to have and not shy away from!
@fancifulimpressionАй бұрын
I can understand what you’re saying here but want to emphasize I think that reading books and buying new books especially is more political than ever now. I’d urge not shying away from that. Especially given conservatives push towards outright book bans and defunding or silencing or banning within public libraries (which should be a public good).
@sc8717Ай бұрын
Anthony Horowitz appeared on a podcast, that you can watch here on KZbin if you want, called The Bookshelf with Ryan Tubridy. He talks about his life and books that he's read that were pivotal or important or moving for him. It gives you a little bit of insight into him and how his life has shaped his writing.
@gainsandbrainsАй бұрын
So the other series he wrote I don't know if it will make you go any less "hmm...." than this one. The main character is almost comically bigoted and the self-insert of the author really felt like an "at least I'm not THAT bad." But also that's just my interpretation after reading some of his interviews.

Truly the friendships made on that discord have changed my life, there are people that I speak to every day without fail and people that I hold so dear to my heart. Meeting them all in the summer (we missed our international besties so much) was the best two days I've had in such a long while. We are yappers and silly but so caring and empathetic and all there for the love of books. There are times where I literally have to stop what I'm doing and let the discord know something funny I've just seen. Making friends as an adult is tough but I promise when you join that discord people will treat you like they've known you for years

to your point about conservatives lacking empathy - the best response i heard about this election recently is "had democrats won we would be celebrating all the good we get to do, all the ways we could help people. and republicans right now are cheering about all the ways they get to hurt us" and that is 1000% how it feels. I have yet to meet to a person who suppoprts republican (or conservative in general) ideologies that does not also support 'screw you i got mine find your own way forward' as a general philosophy. Its all very self serving on their side and it hurts to see how much they relish in that

I give Magpie a 4, which means I quite liked it. Unlike you, I never ever ever read the back of a book, so I had no idea it was a book within a book etc. It was a bit jarring 1/2 way through, but again , I liked it. I found THE WORD IS MURDER, the first Hawthorne and Horowitz hilarious, with a great twisty mystery. He sets himself up as the idiot sidekick, to the enigmatic Hawthorne, who on the surface seems so alarmingly not PC. As the series unfolds, we get little peaks into the character that I’m finding so intriguing. There is a scene where Hawthorne crashes a production meeting with Spielberg and Peter Jackson that is not to be missed.

The tv show for magpie murders (i think) is much better. The two "timelines" intertwine much more and aren't broken up. I also just love Lesley Manville (who narrates the first two Thursday murder club audibooks and who i easily could have seen playing Joyce or Elizabeth in the movie)

I've read Moonflower Murders and yes, the format continues where Susan has an Atticus Pund novel that she's sort of using to solve a crime and it takes up a chunk of the overall novel📚 I felt the same about The Verifiers - I liked it but I don't think I'll continue the series unless people really seem to love it!

I love the magpie murder series. I love the convoluted and complex mystery plot. The next book is better, but the structure is the same. Maybe try the audiobook if you want to continue? A new one is also coming out next year. I’m also part of the lgbtq community and the representation in these stories don’t bother me. However, the author isn’t and can understand if people have an issue with him writing morally gray/semi-villainous gay characters. I never felt the text was homophobic, just had a flawed gay character.

I did like the first half much better than the second. Horowitz is very good at creating a Christie-like village mystery, something a lot of authors attempt, but very few really nail it. I also feel he did very well with a huge undertaking. I do agree there were parts that dragged, especially in the second half. I didn't notice the conservative view, but then, you read something about it before hand, so maybe would notice it a little more? For whatever it's worth, I enjoyed the first book better than the second.

I DNF'd Magpie Murders. I didn't know about the story switch and didn't appreciate it 😂 it is a trope/device I hate anyway, and I was having so much fun with the Christie-like murder mystery only to suddenly be thrown into something else completely, I was actually annoyed by it 😂 so I just turned it off (I listened to it) and moved on. Perhaps I will give it another try at some point, because now that I *know* what kind of story it is, it is less jarring, but it's not really pulling me back in either, so idk! I just started The Rabbit Factor by Antti Tuomainen, a Finnish author. I don't think it's as known outside of Finland, so I thought I'd mention it, it sounds like something you might like. It's dark humor mystery/thriller, and it's (the first in) a series!

I got woke up like this - You're open-minded and always ready to do the right thing. Whether it’s a twisty thriller or a guilty-pleasure romance novel, you value inclusion in your stories. There is a whole rainbow of books out there ready to brighten up your bookshelf. Fly that flag with pride! I wish the questions were more broad and/ or they asked more because while my answer is okay it doesn’t really reflect the types of genres I like or get very specific.

I’m admittedly a Verifiers apologist but I do also think that if you have roughly equal enjoyment of both series but only want to continue one, I think the choice between giving a platform to a queer woman of color vs a self-described conservative feels like a really obvious political choice right now. No judgment on continuing to read Horowitz in isolation but if they’re being pitted against each other, it feels really gross to pick him. 😕

I agree @kiraasay1384. The assumptions about conservatives lacking empathy is a massive generalization about the group as a whole and is an unfair judgment. Will there be bad eggs in every group of people? Absolutely. But to categorize all as lacking empathy, etc is inaccurate. Unfortunately, unsubscribed.

@michellehov0203 When a group of people is actively voting to take away people's rights it's not a huge jump to assume they lack empathy. That's just a factual deduction based on the politicians and policies they actively agree with. Trying to infringe on others human rights shows a clear lack of empathy 🤷
