Every time someone famous commits suicide the catchphrase ‘reveals stigma to mental illness’ comes up and every time it inevitably is forgotten. It was revealed long ago and keeps coming out from under the rug that our society keeps pushing it back under. That phrase means nothing unless you’ll talk about the stigma tomorrow and next week and next month and next year... This is not how you help people cope with an illness, this is how you make yourself feel better because you know you’ve belittled the illness and the people suffering from it. Be better. Do better.

Yes! It needs to remain an open and ongoing discussion. Shame and ignorance is what killed Kate. Her ignorant siblings (brother) were ashamed of the stigma surrounding mental illness, wanted her to throw herself back into the workforce (she was in no condition to do so) while her sister gave her the advice to get into a treatment facility FIRST before launching any new line. To heal/mend and THEN go out and reinvent herself. She clearly took the wrong advice. We need to really DESTIGMITIZE MENTAL ILLNESS now!!

As someone that has had a family member that has committed suicide, it is a horrific event. There should be more help for those struggling with mental illness.. My heart goes out to her daughter. It’s torment for children and love ones left behind. It tears families apart and you always question what could you have done differently.

"too sad to spend so much time thinking on" there you go. this is the problem. those ones like me who are suffering from a mental illness don't Want people to feel sorry or sad. this is the last thing you are supposed to Tell us. we need reassurance, we need to feel wanted, we need help shining our own light which we find it difficult to appreciate. we don't need others to feel sorry nor to turn a Blind eye after acknolwedging we are suffering because our problem is That we feel alone and unworthy and only the sympaty, the encouragment, the support, the presence is going to prevent us from killing ourselves. the fact itself that if we disappeared someone else would be upset by it isn't enough to prevent us.

That is how most of the family found out before I could call them. It made me sick to see all these family members and friends post on Facebook about how they lost her, but not one came with me to pick her ashes up, or clean out her rooms... Just played a pitty party for their selves on Facebook...

My kids are the most important thing to me in my life, but what if someday....it's not enough. And the obvious conflict..."My kids would be better off without me." I'm a great believer that every human being has the right to decide when they want to end their lives - that no law secular or religious has the authority to dictate how much pain a human being can bear - let alone judge or condemn a person who has come to the point that enough is enough. Be this physical or mental anguish. Should there be avenues available to get help or medication if needed? Yes. Should we encourage people to seek help? Yes. Should there be more education, reform and research concerning mental illness? Yes. Should there be less judgement and condemnation for those who suffer from mental illness commit or commit suicide? Yes. But in the end we are individuals first and foremost and regardless of the roles or religion we either choose or are imposed on us (i.e. mother, father, sister brother, daughter, son, husband, wife etc.) no one, at least from where I stand, will ever be able to dictate how much suffering I must bear. I believe it is my inalienable right to leave this earth when I choose. And I am one of the few fortunate ones whose family respects and understands where I am coming from.

re: suicide. Not everyone has loved ones to think about or to talk to. Suicide hotline can put you on hold or take a message. The person you get isn't always good at their job and they can't spend a lot of time with you because they have to finish up and get on to the next caller. I have had most of these experiences. I could say more but there isn't as much help as you think.

It saddens me so much everytime I hear that someone has lost their life to suicide.I knew nothing of Kate Spade until yesterday but I feel so horrible for her daughter,her family and friends.I do hope that she has found the peace that eluded her.I'll continue to lift her family up in prayer.Personally I've struggled with depression and have contemplated suicide many times but with counseling,faith,love and support I was able to get better.Rest In Peace Kate Spade.

Well my husband has bipolar PTSD and they wanted him to go to class for 5 days and the insurance wanted him to pay $800 a day with insurance up front ridiculous this is why people can't get mental health. Lucky he has VA he can go to his psyche there. And you wonder why so many mental health people walking around.

There were moments in my life when I thought about it during a painful time in my life, I could just never even begin to go through with it bc of the great deal of pain it would cause my family. She must have been at rock bottom and had no hope of it ever getting better. RIP

Deborah Hoffman Yes people may find they temporarily feel better after drinking, but the depression and anxieties only get worse. It is best to stay off all alcohol, Take the prescribed medications, and see your Dr. As often as you need. What somebody looks like on the outside is not always how they feel inside. Sounds like this woman was suffering for many yrs. Also important to see your GP as many patients start to avoid regular check ups etc. And there could be pysical conditions responsible and playing a part in the depressive state

You are 100 percent right, but as a former alcoholic and suffer from Mental illness it is a quick fix to feel better and happy go lucky. It helps to just numb your pain while your going through things. Unfortunately many people turn to it and it’s not uncommon. :(. Now I take medication for my illness but honestly it’s all drugs and none of it is good for you. It’s just really a shame sometimes nothing helps :(

Greatest Ever I know they call it a "cocktail" and it is. Try this pill and if it doesn't work try that one. Sometimes they have such horrible side effects, nausia, upset stomach,.making people feel always exhausted. It is unfortunate that so many deaths have to bring how serious depression can be. There is no shame in gettinv help and who cares about the image of a bag company.

Such a tragic story. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones. May they remember the good times and that she loved them more than they know. People may say this was a selfish act, but we never know ones inner pain that led to wanting an escape. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and if you can make it one more day sometimes you can see the sun on the horizon. Kate wasn't just another spot on life's map, but a talented force who's lamp will continue to burn long after her departure. God bless Kate and the lives she's touched, remember her sweetly.

And mental illness kills by making mental torture so bad people cant handle the pain. She was rumored to have bipolar disorder and that is very serious She most certainly did think of her daughter. She even wrote a letter to her to explain. If you were on fire you would jump out of a windo. It wouldn’t be enough that you had a daughter to stay burning alive. Our bodies and minds will do anything to avoid a high level of pain. When my brother committed suicide 23 years ago, I did a ton of research. Back then, it was way less common to hear about a woman using a violent method of suicide. Women mainly took pills. Setting one's self on fire was also rare, no matter the gender. Now, neither of those statements are true. The state I live in has had an alarming uptick in violent suicides. Women driving into concrete pillars under bridges has become a thing. The reason I bring this up is not just because hanging is a violent method, but how determined do you have to be to hang yourself on a door handle? Even the logistics don't make sense to me. How do you pull off hanging from a doorknob?

You know, it is almost offensive for me, as the wife of a retired officer in the military, to hear things like this. He was deployed twice to protect Americans right to have whatever political beliefs they want so long as it causes no harm to others. We are all so lucky to even be here... There were tons of sperm but WE made it lol! There's also something beautiful about choosing our death. I'm at a point where I'm ready to die, and I'd rather do it on my own terms. I'm young in age but my pain is old. Just hanging on by a thread right now... I don't think suicide is selfish actually. If your dog was in pain would you let him/her suffer to keep YOU happy? I wouldn't. I'd miss my pet but watching him/her suffer would be selfish of ME. And, mental pain (imo) is worse than physical pain. I understand why she killed herself.

Everyone deals with things differently. Some people don't have coping skills and aren't naturally strong. Sometimes the pain is too great to bear. She clearly loved her daughter as she gave up her empire to raise her. You can't judge a person unless you've walked in his/her shoes. I personally wish she would've got help.
