I was a teacher for 7 years from 2004 to 2011. I taught at a very conservative school that was ran by a mormon family. In 2008 Obama had won the presidency. Our principal had the entire school watch the inauguration in the cafeteria. Even though nobody with authority at the school supported Obama they knew it was still something Americans should experience and respect, and so had all the children watch. Not one parent came complaining bout it. I suppose just different times.

I’m daughter burst into tears as she did her college early admission applications and said “I don’t have a dead mother, I don’t have an abuela, and I’m a nothing special white girl.” I walked her through her immigrants and how amazing they were to help her be an American amazing woman. She may not get into the very highly competitive colleges even though on paper she should, I told her she will land where she belongs and can be a fully independent and strong woman with a career in science.Thank you for standing up for and being a strong woman in media!

I think it's great that the teacher made the kids watch the acceptance speech, especially if she knows that most of her students are upset/fearful about Trump. The number one way I've noticed to actually break people out of their TDS is simply having them listen to more than clips of him talking. They can still not like Trump, can disagree with his policies, but at least they'll have a better idea about what his policies actually are.

In a college freshmen writing class I had a professor who would pick a controversial topic and you had to pick a side and defend it. You could pick whatever side. The next week we all were informed we would be writing the opposite perspective. I don’t remember all of the topics, but the one that stood out was the death penalty. When I did learn in that class, is that both sides of most controversial issues have reasonable arguments. Important to learn how to structure arguments so that you didn’t use ad homonyms and logical fallacies. It was a great class.

Good for you. And, as someone who is a lot older, I would add this. It is an extremely critical and important skill to be able to listen to, think through, and understand accurately a perspective or argument that you don't personally hold. For example, as a lawyer, the better you understand the opposition party's argument, the more able you are to make a good argument yourself. Or when you are negotiating a settlement, understanding the other party's view is the 1st step to finding common ground and changing minds. Talking AT people generally doesn't work. Interacting with the thoughts that people actually have does work.

Had an AWESOME English teacher in HS that assigned a number of essays in which we had to defend the opposing view of how we "felt" about the topic. The aim, discovered far into the semester, was to write logically and to THINK about the writing, not just expound on feelings. I learned so much, though at the time it "felt" unfair and grueling, of course. That was the 'old days' when parents just told one to suck it up and do the assignment. (They didn't seem to give a flip about our delicate feelings. ) I think the teacher in this instance could have done better, as could the parent and columnist, certainly. Thanks, Mr. Sauter for not only teaching me to write but for teaching me to think. RIP, sir, you did well.

Loved the English teacher in NY. Actually, listening to a speech and taking notes can be a part of English class. It teaches note taking and reporter skills. Very important skill to learn to listen and record what you hear. As far as telling the students to note the crowd's reaction, that is also a part of what a good reporter would do as it puts the comments in perspective as far as noting the impact. You are learning to discern the underlying message when you pick out the values, not just the words, which is an English comprehension skill.

Retired from teaching in June from a California public high school. Most language arts high school teachers teach rhetoric. It's part of a comprehensive language arts curriculum. My unit took over a month and included logical fallacies and egos/logos/pathos. Examples came from political speeches, commercials, TikTok and IG. My students were always very surprised by the power of language. What that teacher did was appropriate and something I would have done. My teaching goal was always to reveal to students how language is a powerful tool that must be understood to navigate our world. BTW, I'm a Trump supporter.
