Also, in the comics, it has been retconned (at least in the Earth-616 Universe) that the Penance Stare does NOT work on individuals who do not have souls. Galactus technically does not have a soul thanks to his cosmic rebirth.

Silver Surfer (Marvel) vs. Martian Manhunter (DC Comics) and Frieza (Dragon Ball Z) vs. Megatron (Transformers) were arguably foreshadowings of this fight. Silver Surfer is a Herald of Galactus while Megatron was transformed into Galvatron becoming a Herald of Unicron.
