Slavery goes back to our first written language society, the Sumerians. Even today there are more slaves in Africa and the Middle East than at the apex of US slavery.

Also, regarding the original comment,--I think if anything is America's 'original sin' it is Manifest Destiny which sought the genocide and displacement of Native peoples. Remember small-pox blankets? And get this, manifest destiny claimed that the Christian 'God' had made the determination white. Christian people were entitled to settle all the land between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Slavery became part and parcel of that process, this is unfortunately true. This is why history classes are important. Cut to the present and Christian supremacy is still a terrible stain and strain upon the American values of freedom and equality.

I think it's maybe partly because he's from the UK and we aren't used to mass shootings-there are shootings in places like London of course but we don't have anything like the USA. After the Dunblane school massacre here in Scotland we cracked down LOTS on guns and pretty much everyone agreed it was the right thing to do. Since then (this was the mid 90s that Dunblane happened) we've had no school shootings in the UK and there's been mass shootings where more than 3 people have been killed. There's been more mass shootings than that but they have all either had no deaths or less than 3. I think him having this "outsiders perspective" makes him realise more how insane things are with guns. And I have to point out it's not as though we've banned guns altogether, we have just not let people have guns without "reasonable excuse" and self defense isn't one of them. We can also go to gun ranges as well as sport shooting and certain guns can be used by farmers and professionals for pest control but we have much more checks etc...And I know its harder to change gun laws in the USA but it was difficult in Australia too yet they managed to change. Anyway I sincerely hope things change in America for the better in some way ❤

What 9/11 did was allow right wing Christian religious extremists to shift the focus away from their terrorist activities and get people to worry about right wing Muslim extremism… but the Muslim extremists were never really as much of a threat to Americans given that their activities tended to be half a world away from most Americans. Even at the height of the fears about right wing Muslim extremist terrorists, they only represented 7% of the deaths from terrorist activities in America this century (which includes the deaths from 9/11). More than 75% of the deaths from terrorism in the US comes from right wing Christian religious extremists, and the vast majority of those offenders were white supremacists.

Also , look overseas for gun laws and bring them here! Nations like Switzerland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. have made major changes to gun laws following terrible mass shootings in their countries. Others like Japan and South Korea basically 100% ban privately own guns in their countries and have among the safest nations in the world. These countries have learned from both their own mistakes and the mistakes the USA refuses to correct to make their countries safer! The U.S. gun laws and 2nd Amendment are badly outdated and need a serious overhaul.

Agreed. Most mass shooters do not expect to survive their encounter with law enforcement, and many take their own lives. The Dollar General shooter left a suicide note.

@@empressannjam1 Gun control policies. For instance, most mass shooters use a brand new AR platform. Obtaining the weapons is part of their plan. Once they get the gun the shooting usually takes place within a few days to a couple of weeks. A waiting period would be a huge step.
