MY only regret is and will be that after he fell sick the Pakistani govertnment or any well wishers in the world never bothered to give him the best treatment. ये ग़ज़ल मैं घर से अपनी नौकरी के स्थान तक कार में सुनता हुआ जाता था। एक बार ब्रायन सिलास की एक दोस्त उनको सुनने आए और ये शेर सुना रही थी जो सही नहीं था, मैंने उसे सही बताया कि ये ऐसे है। उन्होंने मुझसे पूछा कि आपके पास है ये ग़ज़ल? मैंने कहा कि मैं रोज सुनते हुए आता हूं। उन्होंने कहा कि मुझे मिल जाएगी, मैं इसे टेप कराके दे दूंगी। मैंने दे दी, लेकिन वो टेप मुझे फिर नहीं मिली। भगवान का शुक्र की यूट्यूब का जमाना आया और अब जब भी दिल करता है, मैं सुन लेता हूं।

why does any comparison be seen as narrow-mindednes? The comparison of banyan tree with bamboo garden doesn't mean the latter is inferior. what he means while referring to Beatles is the era of instant sensationalism that while being passionate pieces ,, became a phenomenon due to non- musical factors like capturing the political imagination of time . The case with Gazal and classical music never took recourse to populism , especially of his kind. It's more about the Sadhana. So the comparison is quite justified.

+5satya It is very difficult to translate the essence of Urdu poetry in another language. It's not simply a matter of converting words from Urdu to English. The concepts, imagery, lyricism, idioms and phraseology of Urdu do not have a truly an equivalent in English. Roughly translated, the first couplets of the ghazal are : The flower that so adorns your hair - As it were a ray of a light in a dark abyss

+5satya Urdu is highly complicated compared to Enligsh but I will try to put it together. This was written by Qateel Shifai. The poet includes his name in urdu literature, this is called takhallus, the poet speaking to his own soul. You have dressed a flower on your hair, It shines like a candle in the darkness. I hope someone is lucky enough to win my heart, Life has wagered in this gamble. Who knows when someone comes along to stare into my heart? This is why I have my shirt unbuttoned. How much longer will you test my patience of abstinence? By now I have hidden my heartbeat in the deepest corner of my chest. My heart was once a piece of burning charcoal, but, OH, Qateel those days are long gone. Now please gather up all these ashes for the taking, this is all that is left.

The program was arranged by one of my friends in the basement of his house in 1980's when Khan Sahib was visiting USA.There is nothing like being in a private mehfil with small group of Ghazal loving people.It will remain one of the best experience of my life . I always think that there is so much weightage in the lyrics of the Ghazal . It's probably the highest grade of Urdu language. Even people who know Urdu, can get confused. Such terrific singing. This Ghazal is actually a bit simple without the improvisations . But from a literal meaning it's not simple .

i got a private mehfil recording of khan sahib mehdi hassan which was held in st louis in 1984.i will post couple of ghazals from that mehfil so that you can figure it out that its the same mehfil you attended or a different one. i had been to st louis only once in 1994 during summer time and still remember how hot and humid it was.

@Ehsan1Danish dear brother,i will tell you a real story about that.in 1997 i went to Devon Avenue in Chicago.there was a video shop out there and still is by the name of "Al Mansoor Video.the owner was a young guy of then my age named "Nadeem".he knew me very well that this guy is a khan sahib fanatic.i asked at the counter about the Cds of khan sahib.the guy not Nadeem told me that why i am looking for the cds when a live khan sahib's concert is about to start in few hours.

Quadar bhai, This has been my very favourite Ghazal of khan saheb. Have been listening to this since 1990s. This perhaps is the best version. Great. No words for him. His music is divine and you can say that the renditions come straight from almighty, Ishwar allah.
