Meibuken - the house of the warrior who thinks brightly. This is the literal meaning. I see it for this video for the first time and I'm impressed. At least now I know how Meitasu Yagi looked like back then. Good show of the great Hanshi.

Yagi Sensei really placed a lot of ko uke into his kai-ha kata.

And rear hand placed in front of "the mark" rather than traditional hikitae

@drkahara Meibukan translates to "House of the pure-minded warrior."

Strange that on Lenzi's tapes of Toguchi, a translator quotes Toguchi as saying "Ko-Uke should not be relied upon" but that is one of the trademarks of his additional kata as well. You also see Toguchi using Ko-Uke a lot in pictures and in Kihon. I love using this type of "receiving" and I believe it is hallmark Goju-Ryu. Let's talk soon, JP. M

This and other nuances come partly from travels / research--Baqua and Hsing-I (sp); Dai Sensei and an Uchi Deshi (my teacher, Ikemiyagi Sensei) studied in Taiwan with the masters there, most notably, Master Hung--my teacher spent the better part of three years time there studying with Master Hung in Baqua and Hsing-I. Our 4 "training kata," the Tai-Chi series, were influenced by what was learned and brought back via my teacher. Later kata (above) were developed in part from these studies also.

I don't know about more than one translation, but the one I wrote there is the literal. I had to learn it in the "Young Teacher's assistant" course I took a few months ago. Now I have to get ready because in January I shoud have a test for a black belt and I have a belt and a silver medal from the open contest in Italy went on between 5th to 8th of November.

Is it customary in this style to NOT point the toe at the end of the kick?

The head kick (straight kick to the chin) is traditionally hit with the heel. We point the toe in the straight groin kick and round-house kick.
