Mikio Yahara 10th dan, (born 4 April 1947) is one of the most energetic Shotokan Karate practitioners to emerge from the JKA. He was dubbed "the best fighter of his generation" by Masatoshi Nakayama. He is first and foremost a martial artist, having won the JKA Grand Championship. A supporter of reintroducing Karate to its Budo roots.
Mikio Yahara is one of the most dynamic fighters to come out of the JKA. His unique fighting style made him a fan favorite. However, it is his exploration of Budo Karate that has made him one of the most important Karate Masters today.

I’m so glad that traditional Karate is seeing more light these days. There is so much to be given and so much to be gained from this discipline. I own my fortunate life to it. My best wishes to all those that follow the way. Thanks.

M. Yahara has returned Shotokan to the same roots as Okinawan karate where there it was & still is a combat art developed for fighting in the real world where defeat usually meant death. I was fortunate to spend thirteen years with a similar old school Japanese Sensei who also taught that karate was not a game, he certainly did that during our kumite encounters where I never left without a cut or bruise, the big one was once getting a gyakuzuki in the face, three stitches, lots of blood & a mild concussion. Strange as it may sound, I never had a fear of fighting anyone after that.

One problem with You Tube is that one comment taken out of context by someone itching for an argument (you) leads to nasty words being said. Go back and look at what I first wrote. I wanted to know if that specific technque would work in a real life situation. You then called me a kid and told me he owned his own security company etc. Now that you've had a chance to think about what was asked you might think differently of me and this entire conversation. I am a 5' dan in Uechi-ryu and 2' dan of Shito-ryu but, damn... I have such respect and admiration for Shotokan. Maybe I'll start this style, why not? I'm still young, at my 48 years old 😉
@The-Travel-Man
@The-Travel-Man Жыл бұрын
Nah, stay with Uechi-ryu, it has something Shotokan has never had: soft power, conditioning, Sanchin. Shotokan has nothing on Uechi's conditioning. Uechi and Goju are the soft/hard power styles that are much more suited for older folks. This master surely has a lot of rotator cuff problems, look at his Jodan and Uke strikes.. He is all hard power and tension.
@martinabreu566
@martinabreu566 Жыл бұрын
@@The-Travel-Man yes you are right. Shoto practitioners use to be very rigid. Of course I'll continue with Uechi. I started in 1988 along with Goju which I stopped in 2017 to be more focused on the Uechi style. Thank you very much for your comment.

Flew to England to train under him (among others) in the the 80s. Was nervous the following week, knowing the Types of classes he put on. He liked me after the first 20 minutes because I would always finish first during the 20 minutes of duck waddles up and down the gym floor. Two blew out their knees. “Like” I put mildly, because he would beat on me during his demonstrations following the duck waddles. Those were the years !!! Most of the greats are gone.
