I use the Meike 35mm f1.4 on my X-PRO2 and it's hard to fault. You'd have to spend good money to get a noticeably better lens. It's sharp enough for most things and colours are fine. I've just tried comparing this lens against my Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 color-scopar which currently retails around 400 quid and, to be honest, it's hard to tell the difference. In fact, I would go so far as to say I think the Meike may have the edge on sharpness at wider apertures. I'm starting to find this little lens spends a lot of time on my camera.

Have the lense. Tested it. The sharpness when you step down the aperture is not very pleasing for me (too soft mostly). So only a lense for portaits I would say. Bought the 35mm f/2 from Fuji that is way better though also way more expensive. The Meike for its price is a good lense if you want to test if you like that 35mm photo length and you want to learn using a fully manual lense. (that can be fun aswell especially as it does not do focus by wire)

This my go to and fun lens when I go out. I needed to attach a wider rubber padding on the focusing ring for swifter focusing. The micro contrast on this lens is fantastic.

Seems like a nice lens for the money. I’m considering this lens as a small compact (pancake?) lens for street photography with an X-E3. Yes, I know it is a fully manual lens which doesn’t bother me. My first “real” camera was a Canon FTQL with the kit 50mm manual lens. I’m thinking that this lens is about .5” shallower than Fuji’s first 35mm lens and may be less conspicuous. I welcome your comments on this strategy.

Sounds like a plan, and an inexpensive one too. Of the manual 35mm, and thereabouts, that I've tried so far this seems to be the better one.

Good video job. I'm surprised by the image quality of this lens. The bokeh isn't bad, and the landscape sample is better than average. Other reviewers may deve in deeper with CF, flaring, and sharpness wideopen. I'm sold.

I have Neewer 35mm f1.7. Very similar. Infact, I’ve heard they’re the same company? Looks identical apart from the branding of course. Great lens and i just love using the manual focus. Feels very engaging. Like the Meike, it does have its own colour signature though. My Neewer was just over £50.

Are the focus distance marks reliable? I remember returning my Meike 35mm 1.7 because they were not, plus the lens focused beyond infinity... It frustrated me that one of the advantages of these type of lenses (vintage-style focus and aperture scale) was totally unreliable. What was your experience with this one?
@PhotoTubeUK
@PhotoTubeUK 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video Damian. The quality of the bokeh from this lens looks really, really nice. I think shooting at f2 rather than f1.4 might be a good option a lot of the time though as you will probably get better sharpness and still retain nice bokeh and shallow DOF. I might try one of these lenses myself!

A friend of mine was telling me that for Fujifilm, a 35mm looks more like a 23, and a 50mm looks more like 35, so 50mm would be better for portraits. Thoughts?
@angeloop
@angeloop 5 жыл бұрын
absolutely wrong... Fuji is APS-c, so a 35mm lens will look like a 50mm in Full Frame, and a 50mm will look like a 75mm in full frame. Anyway a 50mm in Fujifilm will give you more subjetc separation from background, so it is fine for portratis. But you can also shoot portratis with this 35mm, if you want more enviroment.
@DamianBrown
@DamianBrown 5 жыл бұрын
As replied already, but it's not true. Your friend has done the maths the wrong way around. You take the number and times it by 1.5 to factor for the crop sensor on our Fuji.

I am looking to buy a first cheap prime for a Fuji XT1 I have to take street photography and in particular try the zone system of sticking it into about f8 and focus a few meters away and then being able to just quickly point and shoot. Would you say that this is a good lens for zone photography? Thanks in advance.

There's some great budget lenses out there, also a lot of X Mount cameras at the lower end of the price range that are excellent for stills and manual lens shooting. A lot of people enjoy lenses at this end of the market so the more the merrier. I don't think a lens needs to cost $$$$$ to be worthy. It all depends on the budget and needs. I know a lot that use vintage lenses only and that's cool too. Or some that want to get into manual shooting. Options are good :)
@Russellhawker
@Russellhawker 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of the older X series cameras are available for banger money now. £70 for an X-A1, £110 for an X-E1 etc. Not everyone is spending mega bucks on a brand new Fuji. So the manual lenses, whether it be legacy glass or these Chinese cheapos, are the only option.
@PhilHarmonicus
@PhilHarmonicus 5 жыл бұрын
@@DamianBrown I'm not knocking these lenses and am very impressed by what they can produce. My point is that if you have an XT3 or a new XH1 then wouldn't you also have a lens to go with that camera? Conversely, if you're just getting into the Fuji domain with an older camera, something like this would be more suitable. Unless KZbin has degraded your images beyond what it normally does, it doesn't seem as though this lens performs to the standard of something like the 18-55.
