I grew up playing basketball and was coached to close in on the basket. We were trained to move forward, set up shots and think the court as zones. All this was valuable when I started playing tennis. Lots of footwork skills from basketball crossed over to my tennis.

Perfect timing, Goddess Meike! I have a match tomorrow morning against a tall athletic male of the species, and I needed this advice about which balls to come in on, to mix in with my serve and volley. Long rallies will NOT favor me with this guy. Many thanks!

It went well enough to encourage me to keep going. I split-stopped a few times I should have split-stepped, and freight trained a few. Overcooked a few putaways. And still only lost 4-6. Lots of good information. I need to close the net more quickly after the split. But my approach shots are mostly quality, and my transition volleys are solid. My knockout punch needs more work. Yay! Thanks for your brilliant work!

@@MeikeBabelTennisTonight and tomorrow is doubles. So I need to figure out an appropriate adaptation. I’ll get lots of practice this weekend. Doubles tennis birthday party tonight, mixed tomorrow, women’s doubles Sunday. Volley! Volley! Volley!

This might be the most interesting video I've seen about volley. I've always focused on technique alone but I just realized this isn't the main issue, I keep struggling at the net mostly because I'm not putting myself in a good position (my conception of split-stepping was wrong and I'm not using the "shrinking the court in 3 balls") Thanks a lot

Great video. I think it's quite common misconception to split step and try to volley where you land from it. The split step is just to get you ready to move in the direction of the ball. There is still footwork left to keep moving forward towards the ball.

Great instructional content as always. At 5:40 I was waiting for someone to come out of the "Honey Bucket" Porto John inside the court. Shouldn't that be placed outside :)

Unfortunately, we have to keep it inside the courts bc we already had idiots vandalize it before.

I was playing doubles tonight and receiving volleys below the net level and was wondering what's the right target. It seems to me the deep ball is right in doubles too from low down? Is that right?

If you get a low ball in doubles your first goal is to not pop it up to the opposite net player or else they have an easy aggressive volley. Place it toward the person at the baseline. Yes, deep is good, however sometimes you can also use a little dink volley to draw them in. Depends on the situation.
