In an interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, an independent Meitei MLA from Manipur, who supports the BJP Biren Singh-led government in Imphal, has emphatically said that Meiteis will never accept the division of Manipur. Mr. Nishikant Sapam, who is also Chairman of the Committee of Privileges and Ethics in the Manipur Assembly, said the demand by ten Kuki MLAs (7 of whom are from the BJP and 2 are ministers) for a separate state or union territory was a fundamental breach of their oath under the Constitution which they took when they become MLAs. That oath commits them to protect the integrity of Manipur. The demand to divide the state is a flagrant breach of that oath.

I could not understand a single point he was trying to make especially getting all the historical facts wrong. 7.5% vs 27%, why would someone choose to be more backward? Whatever the accent issues u might be discussing may or not may not correct but what I felt after staying for more than 20 years outside Manipur, that's the major sentiments. Govt need to do minute senses to prove that wrong but I also come across huge pop of Bangladeshi in many pockets of Delhi in sewing in local garment industries. In metropolitan city like Delhi it's not an issue, because until now but in far flung border state like Manipur where economy is solely based on Central govt. grant, ita a surmountable issues. The reason being revenue is very limited and the ST holding top ranks are not paying income tax.

The Meitei MLA got his facts wrong ' 1. He blamed Nehru for giving away Kabaw Valley in 1947. Fact check : The British gave away Kabaw Valley to Burma in 1826 according to the 'Treaty of Yandaboo' 2. He said Kuki population jumped from 1℅ in 1901 to 28℅ in 2011. Fact check : The Kuki hill areas came under regular British administration at the end of the Anglo kuki war in 1919, so the first census available was 1921 in the Hill Areas. The kuki population in 2011 was not 28℅ it was 14℅.

RESERVATION AND POPULATION IN MANIPUR: Reservation OBC+SC (27%+15.5%)=42.5% Meeitei+Pangal pupulation =57% Reservation for ST = 7.5% Total tribal population = 43% Now, 57 people enjoy 42.5% OBC+SC reservation quota. And, 43 people enjoy 7.5% ST reservation quota.

The Meitei ancestral land (inner Manipur) is only 700 sq mile, ie 10% of the land area of Manipur. And that 700 sq mile area was merged with Indian Union in 1949. Besides throwing racial derogatory words to each other, I’d say there wasn’t any hate between any of the communities, people were living peacefully with each other. I’d say this hate sprung out from having “separate ideology” from other communities. Just as some brothers and sisters move out in different places because they were either manipulated or misguided by their wives and in-laws( The wives and in-laws here are the militants and the politicians). They don’t care for the common people. It must have been much more difficult for Mr. Karan Thapar, yet he was able to carry on and listened to the emotional MLA sprouting false data, going off-topic, and making illogical claims. Few clarifications: 1. MLA as per 3rd Schedule took oath to uphold the integrity of India not Manipur. 2. Its true Churachandpur was named after a Meitei King. This was done by SDO South West BC Gasper to honour the chief invites in a function organised to honour the Labour Corps in 1919. Songpi, Luikhai, Teisieng (Haokip reserves) and Lamka are never conquered by Maharaja Churachand Singh. 3. OBC -27%, SC-15%, EWS -10% + Merits - 40.5% = 92.5% all taken by Meiteis. Now the 7.5% is also under threat. Sic. 4. Level playing field - a. 90% Govt Offices in Imphal b. 90% Hospital c. 90% School & Colleges are all in Imphal. 5. Land Imbalance - a. The hills constitute 90% of the land. The Chiefs are given rights by the Britishers. This has been strengthened by our constitution due to our economic backwardness. b. 700 sq km is the area covered in the valley. c. If the meiteis really wanted the hills land, we all have custom & traditions. Many meitei pockets already exist in hills. d. Representation in the state assembly should also be as per population. For example, Senapati District being 2nd in population should have at least 11 MLAs from the present 6. e. ADCs should not be neglected. So the HAC. LIES CANT BECOME TRUTH EVEN IF WE SAY 1000 TIMES.

The census taken in 1901 was taken fully and properly only in valley areas where only Meiteis reside and a very very few tribals might have reside there.... Hills areas census was not able to be taken properly during that time due to connectivity problems in the hills. We as occupants of the land need to look at our failure to learn coexistence. Mind it, Karan Thapar's comment is unprofessional, unsolicited and preposterous. And his comment is a reflection of our collective failure. If separation is solution, there will be no end to it. I am appalled by the shallow thinking of the ten MLAs who, instead of trying to pacify the rage started demanding separation. They can't see one inch of future.

We should not fall into the divisive politics pushed forward by the plain MLA members. If they love our naga brothers and sisters so much, why not give them their demand for greater Nagaland. I am a kuki but I rather live as a Christian among my naga brothers in greater Nagaland. But once the demand for greater Nagaland gains momentum again, the same people will try to appease the kukis to b on their side. It's time for us tribals to unite and not fall into their petty politics.
