MEL CARTER has to be one of the most UNDERRATED performers of the super sixties! I have SO ENJOYED going through all of MEL's hits here on You Tube...Not sure why he simply was pigeon holed into "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me"...He had so many other songs (including this one) that should have been much bigger hits.

I know that he is by far one of the greatest singers of his time. Others have tried to sing his big hit hold me thrill me kiss me, but their versions don't hold a candle to Mel Carter.

Wikipedia - Carter was born in Cincinnati, Ohio.[1] At age 16, he studied singing with vocalist Little Jimmy Scott. Carter recorded for Sam Cooke's SAR (Derby Records) in the early 1960s and had his first hit in 1963 at the age of 24 with "When a Boy Falls in Love", which was co-written by Cooke. By the time he reached his commercial peak with Imperial Records in the middle of the decade, he was specializing in pop ballads. His biggest success was the Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me", which reached Number 8 in 1965. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[2] He had a couple of other Top 40 entries over the next year, "Band of Gold" and "All of a Sudden My Heart Sings", as well as a few other easy listening sellers. Carter appeared on the DVD of the PBS special, Doo Wop 51, recorded in 2001 performing his hit; he also appeared on another PBS special, Magic Moments: The Best of 50s Pop, performing a tribute to Billy Williams ("I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter") and Tommy Edwards ("It's All in the Game"). Carter later acted on television programs such as Quincy, M.E.; Sanford and Son; Marcus Welby, M.D.; The Eddie Capra Mysteries; CHiPs; and Magnum, P.I.; and in films such as Friday Foster (1975); Chesty Anderson, USN (1976); American Raspberry (1977); and Angel (1984).

As soon as I heard this when it came out in 1963 and I was probably age 12 I felt like crying in tears came to my eyes. Why is that? It was an instant reaction, and I do remember how beautiful the song was especially Mel Carter’s soaring voice towards the end!

Mel Carter owns this song, from the quietly powerful opening to when he breaks out. A masterful song by a brilliant talent.

Aside from Mel's phenomenal voice alone, that statement at the end by Dick Clark never ceases to amaze me. "Oh what a star!" I could be wrong, but I don't think I've heard him say those words about ANY other performer that was ever on American Bandstand back then. What an honor that must have been for Mel!

Yes indeed. At 75 it is so good to remember when this boy first fell in love with that girl in 8th grade and to top it all off the girls and a few of the boys all told me she was crazy about me although I was sooo shy to reply. Confidence deal. To this day I know if I had the stuff to march right up to that girl and say I want to get to know you. Well, we would have been great- grandparents at this time. All the best and listen to your self and persue what is good. Dean Seattle

Mel's stage mannerisms favored Sam Cooke's too. He was coached by the master. By his own admission he was devastated when Sam was murdered. He never trusted Sam's manager either.

@GOLLIMUSIC10 жыл бұрын
jab3785 Hi jab3785. Famous was the most recognized Black male member of the Bandstand "regulars" in the early 60's, and Dick made a point of featuring him often on camera. He and his lady partner may have been the first Black couple on AB but I can't assert that as a fact.
