The first Lethal Weapon...Mel Gibson never looked back....superstardom and a chance to direct and really show what he could do...He would win an Oscar for Braveheart...Released on March 6, 1987, Lethal Weapon was No. 1 at the box office for three weeks before Blind Date supplanted it. It grossed $120.2 million worldwide and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing (Les Fresholtz, Dick Alexander, Vern Poore and Bill Nelson) (losing to The Last Emperor). It is widely considered to be one of the best buddy cop films of all time, influencing numerous "buddy cop" films such as Hot Fuzz, Tango & Cash, Bad Boys and the Rush Hour series.

To this day Braveheart is still in my top 3 favorite movies of all time. Lost count how many times I've watched it. Always loved a behind-the-scenes docu they did during the shooting - there was a shot of him holding a small book "Directing An Epic For Dummies" - someone in the crew had made up as a joke. I am from Philadelphia and in 1999 I went over to Australia for about two months to travel around and unbeknownst to me I picked up in Australian accent. It was so good that I played around a golf with two locals north of Sydney and they didn't know until the 17th hole that I was from America. They thought I was pulling a fast one on them with the accent, but I just said it's something I normally acquired speaking to the people and just living there for that time. Upon coming home I had quite a hard deal in kicking the accent with people telling me that I was getting annoying using it, but I told him it was nothing I was doing on purpose. Gradually it faded away.

My dad was like that, very alpha, but talkative which is bizarre for a dominant man to be. He followed Mad Max, and I never knew why he liked that movie(s). He would observe movies to incorporate these characters into his own persona I think. Of course, he was uniquely himself. He'd watch the Sopranos, and Eastwood, and just a whole host of movies. I had no interest in them. I'd rather read books. He liked to think of himself as lawyerly, and with common sense. Sure, big brained, he had that, but idk, I never got to his level and don't think I ever could have. It was a "from birth" kinda thing. I'm me, you're you, and he's he. You can only carve your own path, be who you are.

Just watched him in Tequila Sunrise and was absolutely smitten every time his Aussie accent broke through. Sucks that he couldn’t let it loose after his early films. Unless you count The Beaver😏
