Mel Ikeda on Raft Style Bonsai

Mel Ikeda is a master of raft style bonsai. Raft style is another method for creating a forest bonsai or multi-trunk looking bonsai, except it is created from a single tree. The tree is trimmed so that the best branches are pretty much on one side of the tree and the root ball is trimmed on the down facing side.

First saw this technique a couple of years ago on KZbin. Since it’s fascinated me, I’m going to have to do this one day. Love watching MEL work is magic. Love that ring too MEL.

Really appreciate all the videos. Do you have finished pictures or videos showing the soil level ?How much soil goes over the branch attached to the board ?
