What do you think of the following, Broncos Country?
- Week 1 Starter? Bo Nix or Jarrett Stidham
- Will Bo Nix be a bust? Yes or No
Denver Broncos 2024 NFL Draft class:
Rd. 1: QB Bo Nix
Rd. 3: EDGE Jonah Elliss
Rd. 4: WR Troy Franklin
Rd. 5: CB K. Abrams-Draine
Rd. 5: RB Audric Estime
Rd. 7: WR Devaughn Vele
Rd. 7: C Nick Garigiulo
ESPN’s Mel Kiper on Broncos draft:
“Coach Sean Payton & Co. saw the run on quarterbacks -- five in the top 10 -- and stood pat, selecting Bo Nix (12). I wrote at length about the move on Thursday, but to sum it up: That's way too high for Nix, who put up massive numbers at Oregon but played in an offense in which he wasn't asked to go through read progressions. There's a ton of risk here. No one will remember that this pick was questioned if Nix becomes an immediate star, but Payton's Denver tenure is now tied to a passer with question marks. Now, I did like the Broncos' pick of Troy Franklin (102), who was Nix's top pass-catcher at Oregon. I thought he'd go in Round 2, and instead they were able to get him on Day 3. Franklin and Nix's connection already is strong, as they combined for 1,383 yards and 14 scores a year ago. Kris Abrams-Draine (145) is a high-risk, high-reward cornerback who can make a big play but also get beat deep. Edge rusher Jonah Elliss (76) had 12 sacks last season but is undersized at 6-2, 248 pounds. Audric Estime's (147) stock dropped after he ran a 4.71-second 40-yard dash at the combine, but his tape doesn't lie -- I think he can be a good running back at the next level. As I said, Payton's future is aligned with the sixth-best signal-caller in this draft, and we know there's not a great history of six QBs being stellar in one draft class. Likely half of those guys will end up having mediocre careers. For Payton's sake, he better hope it's not his guy or he won't last long with the Broncos.”
Running backs with a 4.60+ 40-yard dash
2024: Audric Estime (4.71) - Broncos
2023: Kenny McIntosh (4.62) - Seahawks
2022: Tyler Allgeier (4.60) - Falcons
2022: Kyren Williams (4.65) - Rams
2021: Larry Rountree (4.62) - Chargers
2021: Gary Brightwell (4.62) - Giants
2021: Rhamondre Stevenson (4.64) - Patriots
2020: C. Edwards-Helaire (4.60) - Chiefs
2020: La’Mical Perine (4.62) - Jets
2020: Zack Moss (4.65) - Bills

Bo Nix is going to be the best QB in his draft class because he's not going to be asked to carry the offense, and he's a good fit in Payton's offense and the opposite of what Russell Wilson was.

I don't know if Nix will be the best quarterback in the draft, but any qb who will actually run Sean Payton's offense is an upgrade over Russell Wilson. If the defense hadn't gone on a tear of forcing turnovers, Denver probably would have won two games in 2023.

You can call him a second round grade all that you want. The fact of the matter is that he was the best QB on the board when the Broncos drafted. With a large drop off behind him. Not telling who behind the Broncos would have drafted him.

My question for Petey was, what should the Broncos have done at 12? Petey doesn't like Jarrett Stidham, and he doesn't like Bo Nix. His answer was basically that they should have kept Russell Wilson. Knowing that this wasn't a viable option, I would really like to know what the Nix haters wanted Denver to do? I would be fine with passing on Nix because I think Stidham can become a quality QB in the Payton system. But if you pass on Nix and you hate Stidham, then you don't have a quarterback.

@Dmanz.automedic I don't think Petey hates the Broncos, I just don't think he likes the type of quarterbacks that will succeed in Sean Payton's offense. I think Petey would like a Jayden Daniels, Lamar Jackson type guy because they are exciting and dynamic as opposed to a Payton guy who is efficient and surgical. Bo Nix fits what Sean Payton does better than any quarterback other than Caleb Williams. But that's not what Petey wants. Petey wanted the Broncos to hold on to Russ. Russ loses a lot, but he's more exciting. I personally would rather win boring than lose with a flair, but that's just me.

Everyone is smarter than Sean Payton when it comes to QB...... in their own minds. It's like this whole narrative that Sean Payton arrogantly picked Nix and ignored the analytics. Objectively false. Coach Payton talked forever about how he asked the staff to take out Bo's routine screens and short passes (which are very important in the modern NFL) and the stats on the deeper stuff kept coming back number 1, number 1, number 2, number 1. People dig their heels in on a narrative and just wear it out. It's funny. I think Pete wanted the sexy pick. I get it, it would've been nice. Sean Payton went with the smarter avenue. It's like we've forgotten who Sean Payton is. Did we see how much more improved Russ was last year under him? He literally got every last drop of blood out of the turnip that is Russ Wilson. Now give him a QB who ideally fits his system? I just don't understand the hand wringing. Pat Mahomes has made people crazy and greedy, thinking we're going to find a replica of him or something. It ain't gonna happen, and it sure as HELL ain't Caleb Williams.

This narrative that "Sean Payton is now tied to Nix" is total BS. If Nix sucks horribly year one? Guess what..... Sean Payton will take another swing next year. I fully believe the ownership group hired him with an understanding that it would be a 4 or 5 year commitment (barring something crazy like multiple 2 win seasons in a row). I think they understand how detrimental the constant coaching carousel is to developing young players. I think they want continuity and I think they have a LONG TERM vision of fixing this team, but here in internet land, it's fun to pontificate that "Sean is tied to Nix and will be fired instantly if he doesn't pan." I don't believe it for a second. This is from the mouths of people who NEED constant content, like Mel Kiper, who's never coached a day of NFL football in his life. Or how about this obviously false narrative that "Sean Payton is arrogant for picking Nix, and he ignored the analytics." Ummm..... did you hear the guy talk? Sean put the Broncos analytics team to work, taking out all the routine screens and short stuff that Oregon ran, to see where Nix fell. Guess what? It was tops of the class for a lot of those stats. Sean Payton and the front office did their homework and due diligence on this class. There was no arrogant ignoring of data. These narratives keep content coming but they're not based in reality whatsoever.

A starter is as likely as not to be indifferent about the new first round pick. John Elway wasn't at all happy when Tommy Maddox was drafted, and didn't bother with him. Joe Montana didn't like it when SF traded for Steve Young. So I don't think that lack of a veteran matters that much.

Matthew, I implore you and any Broncos fan not liking the Bo Nix pick, to take a look at this breakdown of Bo Nix so you can reevaluate your opinion a little bit on the selection. I am an Oregon fan, through and through and have become a huge fan of Bo because how good he CAN be. Would love to hear your response. 1. He fits Sean Payton’s offense like a glove. Yes, Oregons offense was a lot of dink and dunk, but so is Payton’s offense. He will need a few years to get the players around him, but give him time to learn the NFL. 2. And this is perhaps the BIGGEST benefit of Bo Nix, he is an Offensive Coordinator playing Quarterback. His knowledge of defensive alignments, line AND play adjustments, and being able to read where to throw the ball is second to none. Dan Lanning and Will Stein (Oregon’s HC and OC respectively) gave the keys of the entire offense to Bo Nix and it led Oregon to having one of if not the best offenses in all of college football. 3. Yes, he may have not been asked to carry the team on his back and not make longer reads, but these are things that he definitely can do if asked but he will need time to learn the defenses of the league. With all that said, I will agree he was taken a little too high, but no doubt the Raiders or the Rams would have picked him up if the Broncos did not. He needs some development, but at least he will have a leg up in the offense that he passed with flying colors according to Paton/Payton.

I think most analysts will agree that Bo is going into one of two best situations in the NFL for a rookie QB. Sean has developed QBs. He even made Russ look like an NFL starter again. You can't assign a value on that. Further, Caleb thru less yards per attempt last season than Bo, but not a peep about it. What has been said about winning in this league is that you have to have the right owner, with the right coach and with the right QB to be successful. Not the best, the right QB. I think Broncos fans feel like for the first time in a long time, we now have all three of those things again. We have reason to hope that Bo will be good beyond a value he was assigned by a bunch of analysts who've never played at his level. Bo relayed a story that at some point in his private workout, that Sean walked up to Bo and said "this is the guy." Sean fell in love with Bo, and we didnt have to mortgage the future on him because he fell to the Broncos. BUT Sean wasn't going to let him go by the Broncos by trading back to collect more assets because of said media value or what Sean has labeled the "NFL train." He lost out on the Mahomes pick to the Chiefs as they jumped Sean and the Saints. Again, you can't put a value on that. Bo has the moxy, processing power, the arm strength, the right coach to develop him, and the right owners to be successful. Sean believes that, and fans can hope again we found our next franchise QB.

The Bo Nix pick was legit. It's a 50-50 proposition anytime you draft a QB. The reality is nobody knows until the guy gets a chance to play. Anything leading up to that is pure speculation. Analyze all the stats. It's a guessing game. Sean Payton sees something there, so that's good enough for me. Go Broncos.

Look, the bottom line is this: Bo Nix can make EVERY throw, and do it with amazing accuracy. Don't want to buy that? Then spend an afternoon on KZbin watching his film. He's smart, got a strong arm,, can read defenses, is fast, elusive, and a leader. The guy doesn't make mistakes. Ignore the mud throwing. Honestly, Jaydon Daniels, JJ McCarthy and the others --- Caleb Williams the lone exception --- have very high bust potential. Nix does not. Why? Because he had 61 college starts and is proven. Tape this to yer fridge.

Even if you're not the biggest Bo Nix fan, I want to know what people think we should have done instead. Option A: trade up for McCarthy, a guy who's very raw and to me looks like he could be a good but not great QB. Option B: wait until like round 4 and take a guy like Spencer Rattler. A long shot that he could be our starter long term, and most likely would result in us being back at the QB question next year. Trading down and still getting Nix was likely not an option. There were plenty of teams interested in QBs not far behind us, like the Raiders, Saints, Seahawks, and even Rams. It's very likely one of them would have taken him if we didn't.

Last year I don't recall very many throws underneath over the middle. Hopefully the offensive line will provide Nix (whenever he arrives) with space to see and complete those throws (if we can find someone capable to maneuvering in that space.) Regarding your ADOT comments, I watched the Troy Franklin highlights and saw him catch a number of crossing routes (lack of depth) and run away from coverage and gain significant yardage. Just sayin'.

Bo Nix is really Brian Griese Jr. Most of his passes are 3 yards or less 70% of time. His other passes are 10 yards or less. Nix is better mobility wise is a little bit better than Griese but Nix and Griese are the same QB on most throws. I don't expect Nix to start until week 8 or later. Thanks for your work Petey.

Sean would not have drafted QB in the first round had he gotten Zach in house earlier. He should have gotten Zach help on OLine and tight end followed by receiver. But hopefully the fans lets this play out.

I keep hearing the same nonsense criticism regurgitated at nauseum regarding the NIX pick. It is as if a bunch of draftniks copy and paste eachothers thoughts because they really are not good analysts. It is "well he can't throw the deep ball because his YPC was low" or "All the experts had him as a second round pick so the Broncos drafted him too high." These people seem to gloss over the deep throws he did complete. They also seem to miss the fact that every year there are guys who may be projected to go later but find great success in the league. None of these people are really expert analysts. None of them had guys like Tom Brady or Brock Purdy high on their list of prospects. If your draft strategy is to take a poll on where analysts think a guy will end up being drafted and just go with that, then you have no place in an NFL front office.

the broncos need to be PATIENT this time with the QB position & develop nix the right way. we need to do the opposite of what the commanders did with sam howell.. or all the other teams who failed their young QB’s.

No Bo Nix will not be a bust, but he isn't gonna be overly great right away. I think he will be amongst the 2-4 QBs takin in Round 1 who will be successful in the long run. Especially because I think Payton is practically stakin his job on this. Sure a lot remains to be seen, but the flipped side to that is the fact that the nature of the risk is unique just for the fact that you have to someone likes of a Sean Payton to do it. We'll find out one way or another, but this may be proof that we settin our CJ Stroud story. After all, CJ is listed amongst the aforementioned QBs with 40+ TDs in college.

No, that is dumb. It's not too early if that is your guy. Especially because the Broncos didn't have a second round. Penix and McCarthy were supposed to be second rounders also. You have to get your guy before he's gone. I like Bo Nix, but I also agree with you. He's not perfect and he needs guys around him. But that is true for all teams. With Payton developing Bo and getting some guys around him he will be good in time.

Why do you think Sean wanted Zach 30 days before he got him? The Jets held him until the last minute so Sean couldn’t meet with him and then find out how good he was and how bad the Jets really were. Look what the Jets have done for Rogers…they have picked up an O Line and then took a Tackle and a Tight-end with picks 10 & 11 in the first round…Sean has no intention on getting BO all screwed up by starting him before he is NFL ready.

You just contradicted yourself from what you were saying just 1 minute before lol Also, I have a feeling that the competition isn’t between Stidham and Bo. It’s between Bo and Zach. They didn’t bring Zach here to make him 3rd string. He’ll most likely be 2nd.

Bo literally has some of the best college stats and patey is drinking the analysis’s Kool-aid in bashing him because he is a year or two older than some other draft picks. People who get mad at Mel Kiper and other draft gurus need to understand that they base things on value. If Denver had drafted Bo Nix in the 3rd round, he would have been called the steal of the draft. Same player. Denver would have been slammed if they took Tom Nalen or Shannon Sharpe in the first round because it would have been considered poor value. So relax people, because all that goes out of the window when the pads start popping.

Quit talking about “Potential QB starters in the future” and this narrative that the broncos sold themselves short when drafting Bo Nix because YOU had a 2nd round grade on him. He’s a fine quarterback and shouldn’t be shamed due to the way Oregon ran their offense, he can make any throw on the field the tape shows that.
@BroncosTV
@BroncosTV Ай бұрын
"The tape shows that" The tape shows last year this amount of passes 20+ yards: Nix: 47 attempts McCarthy: 56 attempts Drake Maye: 85 attempts Caleb Williams: 86 attempts Penix: 89 attempts QBs that go round 1 are players that can push the ball down the field and create explosive plays. Thats what makes them special and sought after. The sample size of Nix throwing down the field is simply not big enough to know whether or not he can do it at a consistent and high level in the NFL. The entire reason why I am okay with using a 2nd on him because of the potential upside but not wanting to risk a 1st on someone who just did not do it enough at the collegiate level.
@TheRealJRealer
@TheRealJRealer Ай бұрын
@@BroncosTV He is capable of throwing down the field. The nfl isn’t about dinking and dunking you take your shots if they’re there but Bo understands coverages and knows who’ll be open with a concept. That’s exactly how Sean would like his quarterback to play. We’ll win a lot of games this season if Bo can excel in this Sean lead offense and that’s a fact

@@BroncosTVIn the case of the Broncos Bo was the guy all along. Why trade back and risk your guy not being there in the second round when the division rival would’ve POTENTIALLY taken him the very next pick. Lets say Bo turned into Mahomes here, you would be sick to know you could’ve had that caliber player but didn’t take him because you were too stubborn and listened to draft analysts. When you knew you needed a quarterback, and liked you’ve stated time and time again the NFL draft is a crap shoot for QBs in the first round so why not take your guy is what I’m saying.

Stop this total nonsense about Payton's legacy being destroyed if he fails to win with Bo Nix. It's idiotic. Mike Tomlin is just a few spots ahead of Payton on the all time wins list. He won only one Super Bowl with Ben Roethlisberger. Is his legacy destroyed because he drafted Kenny Pickett & he didn't work out? How 'bout Shanahan's? Is his legacy a failure since Cutler failed? The idea is based on what? Some arbitrary opinion by media talking heads?

I don't know. Any draft pick is a risk. College and pros are just too different. I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I hope we do give somebody the patience to develop and not kill their confidence as they are learning.
