Never heard of Mel Tillis. Only I've been an admirer of his song 'Ruby, Don't Take You Love To Town' ever since first hearing it in 1969, sung by Kenny Rogers. Both the construction of the story and the words are brilliant. I never hear it without feeling the emotion of the situation. As if in the room where the cripple soldier is pleading for his wife to stand by him. A meaningful & truly classic song. Wonderful to hear the writer sing it himself, looking so young & handsome. Now to see him in his later years, & hear his stutter (I had one too, in my youth), then that he's already passed, leaves me saddened not to have looked up his masterpiece in his lifetime. RIP Mr Tillis ☘️

I saw Mel and his family, in 1998 at his Theatre in Branson, Missouri, and it was the best live country show I have ever seen. Mel's songs live, were as perfect as his recordings. A wonderful singer/songwriter, entertainer. RIP Mel.

I was involved in a partnership putting on concerts and dances in South Texas in the nineteen seventies. We hired Mel to headline and consequently got to visit with him quite a bit. He was a true southern gentleman. We sat on his tour bus and I was blown away by his generosity and kindness. He’s definitely missed.

One thing I picked up from what Mel said, was that his Mother told him to go back to school and give them something to laugh about. His Mother gave him the tools to use humor, and turn his liability into an asset. Sure is a big difference between then and now.

I got to dance with Merle at one of his concerts, he loved to get out on the floor and dance,,,I was about 22 and standing there and Merle walked up and said "young lady may I have this dance?",,,,,, it was only about 45 seconds, but he was such a gentleman! I got to see him again about 20 years ago and told him about that,,,he is such a sweet man!!

Cousin Mel sure is missed. I’m glad y’all enjoyed the story of MY GRANDMOTHER running 3 red lights. What’s even funnier is none of it was true! Grandmother quit driving at 83 when her dementia started. She lived with us until 2006, she passed at home 2 years later. Aunt Woodrow lived to be 96 and was the last sister to pass about the same time Melvin did. Oh and they never wore nail polish. LOL

Umm, in the video he explains that his Father stuttered and his Brother also stuttered, so it appears that the Brothers inherited the problem which does make sense, because stuttering is inherited.
