You can also dry the leaves and make a fairly reasonable tea substitute with them as well. Also a better way to relieve the headache with this plant is to rapidly rub and crush leafy twigs in your hands and inhale the smell of the oils so you don't have to chew the leaves.

I used to have several Punk trees at another house I lived in. A messy tree shedding its bark and it catches fire real easy. There were a few of them north of me that I got some paper bark off of a few years back wondering if it would work in a fire piston. Tried the paper bark in several different pistons and it did not light. Not surprised that it lights easy with a spark rod.

Try charring the bark first then using it in the fire piston.
