He was looking at books about how a shinobi should die and dealt with the pain and guilt by being in the darkness of the anbu, doing the village's dirty work and carrying the sadness and guilt, for 10 years. It was only the last 3 years (he tried out 2 teams before them) that he started to come out of the darkness and become a teacher. Like he said, he has found new comrades to help fill the void.

For me kakashi history is about someone who had everything, family, talent, love... and lost not only by the war or other people but also by him, that is why he's not like sasuke, he knows that he is not a victim, a good guy. Sasuke in the other hand have someone to blame, sasuke see himself as a victim.
