Kakashi being able to have that closer with his father has always been a legendary scene to me. I just wish fillers in this series were actually about important events or people. I think the part that made it felt so real is that he died protecting a tertiary character not one of the main ones in a split second decision that showed tremendous humility which created a fantastic cliffhanger that felt down to earth and real. I'm still not sure how Naruto would be able to recognize Kakashi at all by sensing him. Naruto had never sensed his chakra when he gained Sage Mode, or any time prior to this moment. EDIT: Another responder made a good analogy. A blind man who finally gets his sight, wouldn't know what his friends look like when he sees them for the first time. EDIT: Good lord, the butthurt of these responders over such a simple observation. Why?

This was such a masterful use of a “death.” The death of Jiraiya made Kakashi’s “death” very believable for everyone and it was therefore genuinely heartbreaking, which makes his revival also very unexpected. His brief death also managed to give us so much information about the past (Minato, Obito, Rin, and his father) and really begins to connect it with the future before the Fourth Great Ninja War began.

Even though Kakashi is one of my favorite characters, it would have been better if he died. Naruto is easily my favorite anime but my biggest complaint is that they never really killed off any characters. The only ones I can think of are the third Hokage, Jiraiya, and Neji. I think it would have made for better story pacing and character development if fights between characters had more consequence.

its the lead into this scene that always get me, kakashi had a chance to survive had he not used the technique, pain had little reason to come and finish him off after learning he survived and he doesn't seem to be lethally injured. the fact he just sees the fate of konoha at threat, he sees one last sacrificial act he can do to save someone and he takes it with barely a moment of consideration. (consider how compressed the time is while he's thinking, everything is complete slow motion)
