Stage 4 Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, claimed the life of a former employee at FOX 10.
Kristy Lake died earlier this year, and since her death, the people who loved Krista most have vowed to everything they can to stop other from getting this deadly disease.

I started at a new job about 8 years ago. One of the girls that worked there was very friendly and we hit it off right away! I walked into her office one day and saw a black mole on her arm the size of my thumbnail. She just happened to be wearing a sleeveless blouse. Prior to this job, I had work at a doctor’s office for almost 20 years. I didn’t say anything at first but I eventually went back to her office, shut the door, and I asked her if we could talk. I told her that I noticed the mole on her arm and I was very concerned about it. She said she knows she needs to get it checked but just hadn’t made the appointment. I told her that I really thought it was a good idea to have it looked at by a dermatologist. Once she was seen, she called me immediately and told me that I had saved her life! It was melanoma! She had surgery and it was totally removed. She tells everyone who sees her scar what happened and how the new girl at the office saved her life!

My first husband ignored a large growth on his back. We were dating then. I told him you need to get to a doctor asap. He died less than 1 year later. My heart goes out to your family. Melanoma is a horrible disease. I was a widow before the age of 21.

I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma in1997.I waited 6 months before getting it looked at and was very lucky. Please everyone do self checks and get checked by a doctor. I am so sorry for your loss and you are doing a great thing by spreading the word.

You were very lucky indeed. Melanoma can be a horrible deadly disease. My husband was diagnosed with Melanoma IV in 1996 and died January 1997. He was 34. I miss him dearly every day. Our 2 sons were babies when he died and he would've just adore his boys and be so proud of them I know. Most importantly though: keep getting yourself checked!!

I am a natural redhead with very fair skin and blue eyes. I was a walking time bomb. I discovered a spot on my lower leg, but over the course of a year and a half, and for various reasons, I forgot to ask about it. Finally, I made it to my doctor's office for my yearly checkup, and I remembered to have her take a look. It turned out to be melanoma, Clark's level III. I had surgery, they took lymph nodes to be safe, and I haven't had a problem since. It's been over 6 years now. I get my checkups regularly, and I've decided to keep on with the 6 month checkups, even though I can technically move them out to yearly. The good Lord above was sure looking out for me, and it sounds like he was looking out for you, too.

My mother was 42 and ignored a knot that came up on her leg. It was in her brain and it was too late when she finally went to the doctor. When she died she left 4 children under the age of 7. I missed her at all the milestones in my life.

I see the bulletin board in Wickenburg,Az. daily and decided to get checked as I had some tags on my skin. I was diagnosed with skin carcinoma and had a pecan size mass removed from my shoulder as well as precancerous spot removed from my face and arm. Everyday I thank The Good Lord for that sign. My father lived in Wickenburg, AZ. He died in Sept 2010 of Melanoma that metastasized. He use to say "Sunscreen was for Sissies" till the Melanoma got out of control. I miss him every day. 😢

I saw a suspicious mole on my back and went to a dermatologist. It was basal cell cancer, fortunately. They removed the mole, and that was 25 years ago. Please go to a dermatologist once a year.

My mum died of melanoma. Her primary tumour had never been found. It had begun as a small tumour in her lymph node in the groin area. Melanoma then spread throughout mum's body except her brain. All what she hoped was no affected brain. Mum passed from failure to her GI system due to melanoma. It was horrendous and a very thorny path for all of us. I had a friend from High School (in Australia) who died at age 21 from melanoma. She baked and baked her fair skin & I remember seeing her lying in the sun during the school lunch break out on the sports oval. Skin cancer can strike at ANY age. No matter how old you are, get your skin checked & use sunscreen, a hat and cover up. Unfortunately in Australia, there is STILL this myth that a tan makes you look healthy & I wince at seeing people with sunburn or that are sunbaking. We have to change people's perceptions about tanning and sun-worshipping. And it is so, so sad for Krista's loved ones - my heart goes out to them and I am so sorry for their loss :-(

I went to a Dr and told it was a fungal infection . I believed and went about my days working . At times it seemed like it was getting better then worse. For many it was hard to believe that melanoma can form under a thumbnail . The nail became crumbly and the nailbed darkened . One day readying for work I dropped a hanger and it cut through my thumb . I cried " Lord , What are You telling me "". Long story short .. It had already went to my brain . Stage 4 Melanoma .. I have had many procedures , Scans , Infusions , surgeries . Now every day is weaker and weaker and soon I sleep . Lord be with me

Last Monday I had a followup 6 month brain MRI and in a few hours I meet with my oncologist to review whether the tumors have grown .Today I also get blood work and get my port flushed out . I am going on 45 months since I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Melanoma in the brain .For some reason I am a long hauler and have miraculously been given more day . Though today I am a bit nervous , The headaches have increased . My cousin was diagnosed with melanoma and he passed away within months and yet here I am going on four years .

I am a 76 year old retired surgical nurse. I had a small bump on the top of my head last July, I thought it was a bug bite. Over the next few months it slowly grew & started to itch. I had my hairdresser take a picture of it with my phone so that I could see what it looked like and it didn't seem all that bad, maybe a cyst? I had my yearly appointment with my dermatologist on November 5th and she biopsied it thinking it was a basal cell like one I had a couple of years ago on my forehead. I was shocked when I saw the path report the next week on my portal, it said invasive Desmoplastic Melanoma. I had never heard of it as it's a rare type of Melanoma. By the time I saw the surgical oncologist on December 15th it had found another bump above my left ear. He did a punch biopsy of it and it was in transit metastatic Desmoplastic Melanoma. I was started on Keytruda immunotherapy on December 30 and in February I found a third bump above my left ear next to where the previous one was. So after 4 rounds of Keytruda, given by infusion every 3 weeks, I had surgery. The surgeon noticed a small nodule behind my left ear while looking at my scalp prior to taking me to the OR. The original tumor was found to be dead and the wide excision over and behind my ear had less than a 0.1 millimeter margin. The Keytruda infusions are being continued through the end of the year and a PET scan is planned for September. I was never a sun bather but I did go tubing once about 35 years ago where I got a bad sunburn. I use sunscreen every time I go out on a sunny day.

My husband had a melanoma removed and after 5 years they found some cancer cells in his lymph nodes which were also removed but another 5 years later it spread to his lungs, liver and bones and he only lived for 9 months. They said it could have come from when he was in the Royal Air Force stationed in Malaya in the 1950s when he worked on aircraft with no shirt on, although they couldn’t be absolutely sure. They said it can take 40 years to develop.

I got two biopsies before I was given the all clear. I know firsthand that skin cancer does not discriminate. I live on Oahu. Exactly 10 years ago I saw a strange looking mole on my right forearm. During a routine visit, I casually asked my family doctor what he thought about it. His eyes got real big and he said he's sending me to a dermatologist. It was diagnosed as melanoma. I went into surgery to have it and the skin around it removed. Then they biopsied the lymph node in my armpit. Thankfully, those results came back benign (negative). I wasn't nearly as concerned as I should have been. Ignorance is bliss. Back in the 60's, growing up in southern California, we spent a lot of summers on the sand at Huntington Beach. We never wore sunscreen. At the end of the day we looked as red as lobsters. It was like a badge of honor. Days later our skin would peel off in sheets. It was like a game to see who could peel off the biggest piece of skin. We had no idea that we were playing with cancer. As a veteran, the VA does a skin evaluation once a year looking for any tell tale signs of skin cancer.

Yes, I of the pre sunscreen generation as well.. it was more like baby oil for us. I had more patience when young so was able to sunbath for long periods of time , unlike now, I am heat intolerant. Lived almost the same childhood you did. Fast forward four decades and the VA never did an evaluation on my skin. And here I am. Looking up what everyone else is looking up. All I can say is, no matter where this journey takes me, I must put my faith in God. No one wants to go out to cancer. Especially seeing what it did to my cousin. But I am guilty as everyone else who became victim. It's always the same story; the sun, and a lack of respect for ultra-violet radiation.

My family lived in Arizona since before it became a state, long before, before the Civil War, even. WEAR HATS all the time, wear clothing that covers the arms and legs. Good grief! No one in my family ever had sun burns, we were trained to be very careful about the sun particularly, wearing big hats. I even collected Victorian hats from Value Village back in the 1960s. They cover everything! Even had veils.

My Hubby had a melanoma on his head,he had a Stroke about 2 years before we found it. He had to get permission off all his Doctors to come off his medication. It took them 7 months to decide. He went in Hospital to have it removed, it came back as stage 4 Melanoma and that the Dr never took it all. I kept asking why he never had Chemo for it. This was ten years ago. 2 weeks before Christmas 2022 he went for a check up at the GP. He was sent for a CT Scan. It came back he has a Tumor in both Lungs his Liver Pancreas and spots on all his other organs. To say it has been a rough 5 months is an understatement. If only they gave him the treatment when he first got it cut out he might not be living on Death Row now. If you or anyone you know has Melanoma of any kind and it comes back malignant do not let them tell you that won't need treatment.

You need to be vigilant even if you avoid the sun, like me, and I had a MM in 2013, stage 1. I wear factor 50 all year round. I am fair skinned and auburn, living in the UK where we don’t have much sun in comparison to other countries. Take care.

Now it has spread on my bones, lungs, abdominal pelvic and lymph nodes on both groin. I just don't know how I long live in this stage now. Anyway I from Philippines.

I've had several skin cancers that were removed, and one that was Melanoma on my upper right arm. I had the Melanoma surgery 5 years ago and I'm checked every 6 months. So far i've been having good luck and the Dermatologist hasn't found anymore. I hope it stays that way. I have seriously thought of retiring to Arizona, but I worry how that much sun would impact someone that has had skin cancer? I can't seem to find any info on it, other than to wear sunscreen.

This is horrible. And sadly, the same way my Cousin died. From diagnosis to emergency brain surgery two days later, to remove a 5-inch tumor on the brain, to flatline; 22 days. It's horrible. And what I do not understand is, how did they identify the tumor, remove it, and she still died? Did they not do any further testing to see if it was in her body? My sincerest condolences to you and your family for the loss of your wife Krista.

This is not just an issue for fair skinned people. A friend who is has dark olive skin w/ dark brown hair & brown eyes has had both melanoma & basal cell cancer. Both times doctors dismissed her because of her skin color. One doctor had written research papers on how people with darker skin get misdiagnosed all the time. Bob Marley died of skin cancer! Please have those moles checked.

My Lady gets her skin checked every once in a while. She's had a few "spots" removed using that kind of freeze drying process they do. it's simple, preventable and necessary. Once it makes it deep enough it gets into your lymph nodes and is very deadly. God bless this family and I always try to make people aware of getting checked.

hey J. Beau, all possible skin cancer checks should be biopsied so that they cut in where they get a depth of the layers of skin-It sounds worse than it is. There are shave biopsies also but they ruin the actual depth of what the mole/tumor could be, just shaving off some of the surface. I am replying to you because just having something that could be cancer frozen off allows the under-the-surface cancer to continue to grow and then it is not noticeable because it is not visible as much from the surface amymore. I learned these particular important facts while I had a melanoma stage 1, 10 years ago. Take good care of that lady! Catching it early saves lives!

I had 2nd or 3rd degree sunburn as a child my father was supposed to be watching me but fell asleep I was outside playing I was 2-3 years old I still have scars . If I get hot the scars turn white while the rest of my skin will turn red. I have two melanomas one I just froze myself recently. The other I’m watching the one I froze I had for 8/9 years it was really big it grew about as big around as a dime and then grew out and looked like it was growing multiple heads like out of a horror movie.. I couldn’t stand looking at it anymore. This other one is almost as big around but hasn’t started growing outwards. I refuse to get treatment. My family history is full of cancer most men in my family don’t live much longer than my age now so I feel blessed already.

The only treatment is to cut it out. Why refuse? Removing it is your first line of treatment. Freezing or burning them is a very superficial treatment. If it’s melanoma, you need to take out significant margins around and under it. You’ll need stitches, but you’ll be alive…

Oh my goodness! I drive a semi daily from Las Vegas to phoenix, and I see a billboard that has this lady’s picture on it, and it says melanoma kills. I see it every single day. And it scares me because she was only two years older than I am. The reason why I’m looking up anything melanoma right now is two days ago my husband came to me and told me to check something out on his scalp and as soon as I saw it, I knew it was something bad. We still don’t know what it, is we have a doctor appointment this coming Monday but I have a sinking feeling that it’s melanoma

She died on Christmas Day due to dehydration in L.E.C.O.M. Nursing home. They didn't even know enough to give her water. She got SEPSIS in that nursing home. L.E.C.O.M. (Lake Erie College of Medicine) HUH. Good for nothing.

Sounds like they failed to treat her properly after removing the cancer. We had a friend have skin cancer removed and they sent him on his merry way. No chemo, no radiation, no follow ups (from what I know). By the time they discovered he was Stage 4, which was not long after the surgery, he had less than a year to live. So they need to advocate for checking for skin cancer, but also for better follow-up care.

I work in this area. Chemo doesn't generally work for melanoma and the only time it is used is if a clinical trial is available. Other than surgery, as a general rule, there are very few treatments for melanoma.

My friend died in just a few months from melanoma, and her wasn’t found on the outside of her body, but it was all internal. Very rare. She found out in July that she was stage four and she was gone by October.

Exactly. It seems as if one melanoma removed and no spread to lymph nodes, then they don't do anything more. Then a lot of these patients turns up again a few years later with stage four..I think, even if at a low grade to begin with, patients should be offered immuno therapy or other treatments no matter what stage. I guess it's a (horrible) question about economics although..

It seems to me, all Melanoma patients should have chemo treatment, no matter the stage. It is somewhat Jeopardy to do check ups only on the skin, when it can pop up internally at any time. I constantly hear of people who removed a melanoma, then was "freed" and only doing check ups on skin, then some years later they have it internally, even if it initially was only a stage 1 or 2. Why not get chemo directly to prevent that?

My husband has stage 4 melanoma. He was diagnosed 3 yrs ago at stage 3. He had a rare form that caused a fungating tumor. He had surgery to remove it and all the lymph nodes in his groin. Then he had 3 months of immunotherapy. At the end of the 3 months he had tumors again . Immunotherapy does not work on all people or cancers. He was put on a chemo pill combo and it had worked up until about a month ago.

Sun. It’s a good & bad thing. But how much sun? When I was a teen, we rubbed baby oil all over our bodies to lay out in the sun. All of us! It was a trend. My sister & I looked like red lobsters! Being a fair skinned brunettes, we realized this is wrong. It was painful! Once I began to use sunscreen I realized I didn’t have a choice. It made the sun on me better. My skin happy. God gave me and all of us the skin color we have. The whole sun-worshipping thing is risky. Don’t do it! We look perfect just the way we are. The sun is good, but can also be bad. Take care of your skin!

I don’t think she looked too dark and definitely didn’t look like leather. Anyone can get melanoma. It’s most common on your head cause you cannot see a lesion cause it’s covered by hair. I had malignant melanoma in 2018 and had to have surgery. The dr. Said if I would have waited another 6 months it could have spread to my lynph nodes and I would have died. My husband made me go to the dr appointment cause I fought him on it. He saved my life. Even if you have fair skin you should still be careful. Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer there is. I grew up on the southern California beaches. I was a fair skin Irish girl. Blistered summers would eventually get very tanned. I've had 3 basel cell carcinomas on my face. One on my lip below my nose. Had the Mohs procedure. I ended up with 30 plus stiches flap procedure. Squamous cell carcinoma on forearm and ankle. Had Mohs procedure on my ankle. Had a freckle suddenly appear on my palm of hand. Doctor immediately wanted to remove it. It was pre-melenoma. Dermatologist told me he does not like moles or freckes on palms of hands or bottoms of feet or toes. Melanoma likes to get into mucous membranes and under nails. It looks like a brown vertical line on toes and finger nails. Moles that look smeared need to have look at and checked. Melanoma tends to affect the cells of those moles. Moles that get darker, thicker boarder changes go to the dermatologist. Don't wait, go to the doctor. It is nothing to get it removed. I just found out that some skin cancers can almost look skin colored. So anything that looks different, please go to a dermatologist.
