Awesome tone. Just a few questions if you don't mind. 1: Is this a 50 watt Plexi, or a 100 watt 59' SL? 2: What year was this amp made? 3: What speakers are you running in the cab? 4: What bridge pickup are you using in the demo 5: At 2:50 on the timeline, after you set your EQ, you played 3-4 short chords, where was the volume set to get that tone? 7: Can that tone at 2:50 be achieved with a JMP or JCM 800 MV model? MJ Bell. Hi thanks. This is the tone in the room with just the camera mic, unfortunately we couldn’t get s capture with the close mics. Here are the answers to your questions. 1. The amp is a 50 watt Marshall 1987x with a modified gain stage and master volume added to the rear. 2. Not sure about the year because The amp is second hand, but they are still part of the current Marshall catalogue. 3. The speakers are Celestion Lead 80’s 4. The bridge pickup is a hand-wound Gibson PAF 5. Master Volume at 10 Treble Volume at 4 6. You can achieve a closer tone from a JMP, but an 800 can also do the trick.

Hi! I have also a Marshall JTM45 2245 plexi 50W. If i'll buy and use an attenuator, can i play with the amp at full blast in my house? In this video i cannot figure how your attenuator influence your volume.

+AngusYoungBoyJR Hi Angus. First off thanks for your question, and great choice in amp!!! The video was filmed using the camera's own internal mic and not the mic that I miked the cab with, so the sound has been compressed and won't indicate much change in volume. An attentuator simply attenuates (lowers) the volume by choking the signal coming out of your head, converting it into heat and passing the remaining signal to the cab. It results in providing the speakers with a cranked amp tone at lower volumes.

Would I put it in between the power amp and cab if your running a pre amp/power amp based rig?

Michael Papadopoulos. Yes. From the power amp out into the attenuator then into the cab.

How often do you go through Valves ? I've just purchased a Laney TT50H and I'm worried it's too loud for home use. Awaiting the quad box - perhaps I should have got something smaller as I'm not playing live atm, just stumbled across the gear at a great price. Anyway I've found this exact attenuator for $150 .. any comments welcome :)

Hi there, sorry to respond so late. Make sure the attenuator is rated to the correct speaker type (my cab is 8 ohms). Buying it will transform that 50 watt beast into a low wattage amp for the bedroom.

Thanks Reza, much appreciated. There's just something very different and snarly, more bite etc, about a 1987X, and even the JMP 2204's. Your 1987 has WAY more bite, in a really great way. Another really good example: Marshall JMP 2204 & 1987 Model Comparison Demo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g56wZq17gcaWp9k For whatever reason, I hear this 1987 as being a hair darker, or "FULLER" sounding. But I prefer the honk, midrange character & snarl of that JMP 2204 MV. If you listen to the intro to Limelight by Rush, at 0:22 to 0:40 - That's KILLER.

+gearlock77 A speaker simulator simulates different cabinets. An attenuator allows you to crank up your amp without it getting too loud.

You don’t put them in the loop, you run a speaker cable from your head into the attenuator, and another speaker cable to the cab from the attenuator.
