"A lot of people just act like you don't exist. I've had wine bottles thrown at me, hot coffee thrown over me. I've been kicked. People can be rather cruel. Some people just get their kicks out of being cruel, I guess."

Finding a good or preferably great spot makes all the difference. Secret, unseen is best, thus rooftops are Gold. Nobody's gonna step on you. My fave was City Centre, next to an old Church and new Church office 10 ft away, a 10 foot span of a concrete cunduit between, it ran like a veranda into a blind corner 13 foot up, with an overhanging roof. I'd keep a permanent set up on 2 pallets on bricks, then thick cardboard, then a tarp and an inflatable. Wind, rain, never got in there. A Hop, A Skip And A Jump.....and I've DISAPPEARED

Thank you, and apologies for the delay in replying (8 months!). While many good citizens provide great services for the homeless through volunteer work, it is the government’s responsibility to address the issue definitively and immediately. It has all the money and resources to do this, but simply don’t treat the homeless as a priority. In other words, it just doesn’t give a toss.

She looks very employable, she already has skills in hospitality she would easily find a job in that sector. She could also easily get Disability Support work would probably just need to enrol in a certificate to be considered for a job.

Wow Well Done for shining a light on the reality of homelessness and allowing the young girl to tell her personal story. I hope someone will give her the opportunity to work in a restaurant so that she and her mum can afford a roof over their head. If she and her Mum are willing to they could relocate to Maryborough or Dunolly etc and start of with a tent and stay in the Caravan Park on a powered site. They could afford to do that and they could get free food from local charaties or afford to buy food etc. Cheaper option than living in the City.

That man is in a business suit needs to be tracked down and punished. If someone of means was randomly attacked the cops would look at the nearby cameras and do something about it.

The time to set goals for yourself, is in your junior and senior yr of high school. If u dont, u can easily become homeless, on a st somewhere. These young adults, have one thing in common, they don't know how to take care of themselves . Whether, a person has substance abuse, or alcohol issues, or mental heslth problems, the longer they r on the st, the more unemployable they become.

It’s an age-old attitude that needs to change if we are serious about addressing the crisis. And as with many homeless people, Jasmine has skills that are going to waste. I am now in the habit of giving money and/or food when I see a homeless person - but like most people I still also walk passed them. So I’m no saint, either.

Forgive me for my ignorance. but I think Homelessness is possibly one of the easiest social issues to solve. Compared to discovering a prevention for brain cancer its pretty simple. The answer, build a social guarantee for housing into the tax system with a 0.01% tax on all purchases under $10,000. Australians spend $96 billion a year on food. The tax on food would make $960 million a year and could build 220 new homes a year. With a building roboto the number of homes could be maximised out to maybe 480 homes for the same price.

There are facilities where homeless people can wash, do laundry etc, mainly thanks to volunteer organisations (Orange Sky from QLD is one notable example). Cohealth has a list on their website. Still, it comes back to the issue of government indolence and apathy, which can be accurately measured by the volunteer efforts to help the homeless. There are more than enough resources to quell the crisis. It just takes the Will to do so - and a bit of vision. Thank you for your comment. It’s a good question.
