As a commuter on the Gippsland line (for now), the new track layout as East Pakenham is very much welcome. There's been many times, especially since the sidings were ripped up at Pakenham to make way for the skyrail, that we've had to wait several minutes while both platforms are occupied at Pakenham before we can stop there. The Gippsland line is already a long-ish commute into the city from where I get on at Warragul so if this can speed travel time up a bit, I'll be happy with it. I haven't had a chance to visit East Pakenham or the new Pakenham stations yet as V/Line services aren't running yet due to other occupation works at Longwarry & Bunyip, but once our trains are back online I'll be sure to check each one out.
@aberfeldy19447 ай бұрын
V/Line needs to rethink the way it services the Gippsland line - it still runs trains like it was 1880 with most trains terminating at Traralgon, a stopping all stations pattern and apparently no thought at all about how to handle the huge growth in Drouin & Warragul. I think a reasonable portion of trains should originate at Warragul and most Traralgon trains should run semi express, with Warragul trains handling the very limited pax numbers between Pakenham and Drouin. I can't see any reason why an up peak service from Traralgon needs to stop at any of those very small towns - from what I see virtually no one alights there.
@Daviesh7 ай бұрын
@@aberfeldy1944 Completely agree, I did a year of commuting from Sale a couple of times a week. I had to drive to Traralgon to get decent service frequency and then the train would get ram packed at Drouin/Warragul. I’m in the Metro footprint now but have family in Drouin, I don’t then the State government has had any thought about how to handle the explosive growth. Peak services originating/terminating at Warragul are needed.

@PJRayment7 ай бұрын
@@aberfeldy1944 "... it still runs trains like it was 1880 with most trains terminating at Traralgon ..." I'd be very surprised if most trains were terminating at Traralgon in 1880. The goal of the Department of Transport seems to be to increase frequencies, reliability, and consistency, not speed. If you have a mix of stopping and express services, then you either double the number of services (costly) or you reduce frequencies for some stations, and you have inconsistent times due to express trains and stopping trains having different journey times. I'm not saying whether that's a good or bad thing; just pointing out what seems to be the intentions. It's not all that many years since there were Warragul trains, and there may be merit in reintroducing them, but they'd likely be just a handful of peak period trains to supplement the Traralgon service.

3:03 - "It's also no longer permitted to install sets of points on Viaducts" That's interesting, what's the story behind that? I presume it's a Victorian railway rule because WA is building points on viaducts right now with their own extensions, including replacing an old ground level terminus with an elevated through station at Armadale (WA) similar to Pakenham. That station will have 3 platforms and will not only have points and crossovers on a viaduct, but will also elevated dead-end overrun sidings/future track expansion points that just stop at a void.
@Taitset7 ай бұрын
Yes definitely a local rule, I'm not sure what the exact reasoning is, but probably something about reducing the (already tiny) risk of derailment on a viaduct.

When I was young my grandfather was the station master at Nar Nar Goon (East of Pakenham). I can remember the endless flashes of the trees which arched over the highway. It was WAY out into the country. And was served by steam trains. Then they wanted to electrify the line and duplicate it so they had to demolish the stationmaster's residence and that was the end for Nar Nar Goon. It is interesting that the new station is mid way between the two. But the obvious logic is that they wanted somewhere WITHOUT the contstraints of housing. The trouble is that if you put a station where the people are NOT and BECAUSE the people are not there you have created a different future problem.

Good video. Answering a couple of points. HCMT trains show E Pakenham because East Pakenham doesn't fit and would result in the front of the train simply showing "East". Comeng and Siemens trains show East Pakenham in full. The change trains announcements aren't incorrect as they refer to destinations of services, not line names. As you said, the line is the Pakenham line.

I suspect V/Line services will eventually terminate at Dandenong and city passengers will have to transfer to a Metro service. Inconvenient, sure, but after the Metro Tunnel comes online there will be much greater service capacity, hopefully ensuring reduced crowding especially for V/Line passengers who might have luggage. Alternatively, through running could be retained for Bairnsdale services, as presumably those services are more likely to have passengers with large bags compared to services to and from Traralgon. The new Ridgelea estate will be going up east of East Pakenham station. It's slated to have about 3000 homes so I'd imagine the station will become pretty busy once all that is finished over the coming decade.

Liverpool (in England!) has had a similar problem with its Central station and has been debating doing something like this for years! Of course, Liverpool is the posterchild of Managed Decline, so our railways get less than the bare minimum.

Hi Martin. Alex here, the guy from West Richmond on the Mernda shuttles day. Excellent video, I think the reason why that siemens pid said “east pakenham services” because the services actually terminate there, it isn’t because the line is called the east pakenham line.

Yeah I thought that was probably the reason, still an inconsistency though, as for every other line the final terminus and line name are the same thing.

@@Taitset yeah that is a very valid point.

Taitset, are you going to do a video where you do a kahoot about Melbourne transport with other youtubers that make Melbourne transport videos?
