I study paint pigments, and something that might be worth noting is that red/orange/yellow pigments are, in my experience, the ones that fade the fastest, and look the worst when faded. Depends of course on the individual pigment. It might be worthwhile listing an actual specific pigment in the design doc, and looking into the ones used in any paint being used. Not sure what pigments are used in train paint though.

3:45 I can infodump about this, and Czech paint schemes: Electric locomotives and units that run on 3kV DC were painted green, electric locomotives and units that run on 25kV 50Hz AC were painted red and multi-system locomotives (that could run on both systems) were painted blue. The first two were set early and followed well enough, (although prototype locomotives didn't follow this - both the first DC (E499.0) and AC (S479.0) locomotives were actually painted blue). Exceptions are some ES499.0/350 locomotives, which were at first painted grey with a middle white stripe, and then red with a white middle stripe, _and then_ blue/white with the yellow stripe at the front. At least the grey paintjob on the ES499.0 prototype survived until at least the ŽSR scheme repaint, because it had the yellow visibility stripe on the front. For whatever reason, faster locomotives would have the visibility stripe omitted? The 162 and 362 classes, did not have one, _but not all of them_ , 150/151 class had the stripe either downsized to a thin strip above the headlights (if i remember right), identical stripe in a more orange color, or outright removed. Actually ŽSSK had this done better, ČD made their multiple units all painted in a blue-grey-red color without regarding what type of current it uses, which would change throughout the years on the City Elefant train. First and second class cars were also more distinct (that is a weird fad shared with the PKP and maybe beyond French and Portuguese Corails I haven't seen this done anywhere) Diesel locomotives were painted dark red until the 1990s, at which point any design that at least looked like a paint job would've been okayed, same thing applies for the older locomotives of both systems (most notoriously classes 130 and 242). Classes 362 and 363 would also have interesting one-off paintjobs, one I remember was a white-silver-light blue-dark blue and another one that was bluish purple with the regular beige stripe for a 362 class, but much thinner and with the lightning bolt-like shape on the sides, like on 750/3/4 locomotives. Passenger cars were mostly painted white/green, except Eurocity/Intercity cars that came from the 90s onwards, which were white/red, _but not all of them_ , the Beer (obligatory lol) coach had a white/pink/dark blue scheme, and Aee/Bee/Apee/Bpee cars were painted either white/lighter green or white/orange (which may have been an ad for ING at the time). Sleeping cars were white/blue, diner cars I assume stayed light blue (I assume because I've never seen a ČD diner car that was not a WRmz or newer). What is a mess now is brand stickers and locomotive labeling. Every 362 class I see at my train station has either the original red plate label, or a sticker label, or a sticker label but in another font, or a sticker label that looks okay but then the logo at the front is tiny. Najbrt design had multiple revisions for the locomotives, the first one (which is a white front with a dark blue trapezoid like shape on the side in a light blue outline) is nearly gone on electric locomotives, but not diesel. The "Národní dopravce" had to be added under the logo as well, _as well as_ adding České Dráhy behind the logo. That appears to have been done on most passenger cars and sides of locomotives (not fronts). And multiple units are just back to every different unit having a different design as long as the colors stay the same. 460 and 560 were repainted to a mostly white-dark blue paintjobs, _but not all of them_ . Regiopanters have more light blue than dark blue, I assume because it's a low floor unit and the window line is large (but then the front has been kept white with only the front plate above the coupler being light blue - why) but a lot of diesel multiple units have either a dark blue-dominant pattern, or just follow what is set for passenger cars. Those mostly have a white/light blue paint scheme with a dark blue stripe below the windows, except sleeping cars and diner cars, which flip the shades of blue around (so dark blue is around the windows now - for clarity, all color/color schemes I mentioned are from the bottom up). ČD Cargo locomotives are only light blue-dark blue, _but not all of them_ , even today so many of them have the old, beaten up paintjob with a ČD Cargo sticker over the ČD logo (for cost saving reasons, that sticker also includes the white background). Every Vectron has a different paint scheme, either plain white, or something more conforming to Najbrt design (but not entirely). Also, more and more regions/integrated transit systems (PID, IDPK) have their own paint schemes for their networks now. I assume this is out of neccessity because an increasing number of train routes have been taken up by private companies and their trains and having blue, yellow, black/gold and different-blue trains would confuse people more (does my ticket still apply to this one?). I think the PID paint scheme, as bad as the initial concept looked, turned out really well (probably because the designers realized that a paintjob should actually follow the vehicle's geometry even if it is just vertical stripes) The Najbrt design is its own pack of issues. Out of any primary color, or any color at all, why blue? Who came up with the white fronts? Why not go with the dark blue? I get they're two different companies, but why do ČD Cargo and ČD (passenger) have completely different logos yet the same typeface and shades of blue?
@segarallychampionship702Ай бұрын
I am not editing more text into this, so here's a thing I forgot: _Not all_ passenger cars have the same paintjob. The roof paint can be either grey or dark blue. A color I consider awful because trainsim mods won't get it right (I won't blame modders, it is just a weird color).
@eRKo-q5gАй бұрын

@@eRKo-q5g I can't find anything right now. The Najbrt paint scheme surely has a design document available somewhere, but I don't know if it's online or just for ČD's internal use. Czech Wikipedia has RAL color codes for the colors used, but it doesn't list any sources.

the only thing I would criticise (unfortunately) are the black doors. Yes it is very common and very established to make the doors black to gain high contrast for the visually impaired. unfortunately the black opens up a new problem: it is much more difficult to determine whether the doors are open or closed, especially on sunny days, where the inside of the train appears darker than the outside.
@chriscollingwood6650Ай бұрын
Perhaps the orange contrast strip at the bottom of the doors would giv enough indication as to door status? We have a similar problem in Melbourne, where someone complained that our door "dressing" looked similar to the inter-carriage gap which led to bellows being added to the gap on our newer trains.
@mypdf18 күн бұрын
@@chriscollingwood6650 I think the German ICE trains have solved this problem pretty well by just using a black outline for the doors, which makes gives them a strong contrast while still helping you see, if they are open or not as the doors themselves are white.

11,500 views. On a video this well made. How is that *it*? Seriously, this is some really impressive work! Puts some of the designers of modern liveries in the UK to shame, and those are liveries on revenue-earning services. It kind of reminds me of late-generation British Rail liveries - Network SouthEast mixed with Intercity Swallow, for example - but that's at most a passing similarity. Consistent, one design language, original, clever use of colour. 10/10, I hope that Slovak Railways either use your design or make their own that actually does the job!

I don’t know why the algorithm decided to show me - a random transit nerd in Los Angeles, California - this. But I’m glad it did! Honestly, this is a fantastic design for a very difficult problem, and it’s one you solved incredibly well! The boomerang/eyelash motif, in particular, looks FANTASTIC. While red and orange are definitely not a common color scheme, you make it work very well, in a way that reminds me of many 1970s livery designs in the USA - particularly San Francisco’s “Sunset” design. Also, have to say, the website is incredibly well done - though I’d check your links for “Train Design Abroad,” they seem to be broken? Very, very impressive all around!
@LaurinLaki12 күн бұрын
Black doors and black - you called it boomerang - locomotive front side swoosh are very typical for liveries designed by Railcolordesign. They look really good, and for a short period of time ZSSK had such a livery on locomotive 383 110 as well. One interesting effect about adding black as a contrast is that it makes even very old locomotives look increasingly more modern.
