It was such a beautiful city. It's absolutely criminal how much of this stunning architecture met the wrecking ball in the post-war era.

Rubbish. All those buildings and more are standing there in 2024. It's not Perth.

So sad that the first comment has to be the same, old hackneyed crap about how everything was better in the good, old days. Sad.

Which buildings in this video have since been demolished?

You are absolutely correct. Sally the Mayor might wonder why nobody wants to come into the city, but the elephant is in the room. It is appalling to witness this city’s decay towards a mediocre and inhospitable wind tunnel full of bulky, dark grey cubes. Thanks to all the planners that have sold Melbourne out to developers.

@@billd01rfc That's a bit of a stretch, don't you think? Lamenting the loss of some beautiful buildings isn't really the same as "everything was better in the old days", which is a demonstrably false statement anyway.

I would have loved living in Melbourne in the 1920s... It was literally heaven on earth.. look at it now.. it's like a once paradise tainted n the souls corrupted n damaged..😢🎉😅😢😮❤

"It is curious to remember that these grounds were once the city's rubbish tip" 😂 Curious indeed! That line gave me a good chuckle. BTW you've done a great job restoring this one. I've rarely heard such a clear soundtrack on a film from the early '30s, and the picture looks good too.

Thanks for letting us know you enjoyed the film. Unfortunately we do not have any better film components for this film and there are audio dropouts where there is just nothing on the film. Appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching.

and all the best buildings in melbourne are still the ones built during this time. Such a shame the modern buildigns are all glass and cheap

Didn't know that private vehicles originally had to use the side tracks of St Kilda Road... Lovely glimpse of an open-sided W1 tram at 1:00!

Horse riding on the Botanic gardens Tan track at 8:00 . Still in use for horse riding in the 1964/65 filming of the NFSA Life in Australia : Melbourne One of this channels most watched films. It would be interesting to find out when and how the horses were squeezed out. I expect an uproar if you took a horse to ride on the tan now.

How tiny the plane trees on St. Kilda Road are! They're so much taller and their trunks so much thicker. If only they could speak.

Lovely historical record. I've been to all those buildings and features shown in the film 14 years ago, and they're still standing to this day. It would've been most enjoyable to hear the narrative, but as usual the sound maniac has ruined the audio, drowning out the spoken word. Thank goodness for subtitles 😮
