In the term of population, Greater Melbourne is about 5 millions, Metro Vancouver is around 2.5 millions. Unlike city of Melbourne, and many other cities, City of Vancouver is geographically very small city. Although Vancouver is 4th most densely city in North America, its population will be surpass by its suburb Surry in next thirty years.

Melbourne is a much bigger city with a metro population of 5 million, compared to Vancouver 2.5 million. When comparing the amount of universities, arts, sports, festivals, etc. It is better to compare Melbourne with similar sized cities like Sydney, Toronto and Montreal. The University of Toronto is larger, and has a higher world ranking than any university in Australia. I think Brisbane with a similar population of 2.5 million, would be a better comparison to Vancouver.

@@SashSays I understand that makes sense. I just thought it was unfair to Vancouver, because it is so much smaller. Although the scenery in Toronto and Montreal can't compare to Vancouver, they are far more sophisticated cities than Vancouver. Toronto has the 3rd largest live theatre scene in the world after New York and London, and all the big time sports leagues. Montreal has 4 huge universities McGill, Concordia, Universite de Montreal, Universite du Quebec and dozens more, creating one of the largest downtown student populations in the world. The nightlife is amazing, and the summer time is one big festival after another.

I'm from Vancouver but now live in Melbourne. Your comparison is pretty accurate but one thing is the population of Vancouver is closer to 2.5 million. Vancouver has lots of stunning natural sceneries such as snow covered mountains, water, small islands, greenery everywhere and the 4 seasons are unique and beautiful. Where as Melbourne doesn’t have the natural scenery like Vancouver and you can not differentiate 4 seasons there. It’s either cold or hot. Melbourne downtown is very vibrant and busy but Vancouver downtown is very quiet and calm. Apart from Vancouver natural scenery I like Melbourne than Vancouver.

You mentioned Perth which I personally find to be a bit too isolated from the rest of the country but I do believe it's also considered regional. I mention this purely because I've been in Australia for 7.5 years and I am struggling to get the points required to migrate here -- my life would have been so much simpler had I just earned the extra 5 points from studying regionally. If you're only looking to go to the most prestigious school I'd recommend trying to get enrolled at Melbourne Uni.

Subscribed. Most of houses in Vancouver are detached houses with gardens, even close to business centre. What about Melbourne? Vancouver is very green where detached houses are but has few trees and grass in business centre. What about Melbourne? Which city is greener? Canadian healthcare is paid from taxes but does not include teeth and vision. What about healthcare in Melbourne? Do you have to pay or it's paid from taxes? Are teeth and vision also included? About 35% of people in Vancouver are Asian, in Greater Vancouver more than 50% of people are Asian. What about Melbourne? Where taxes are higher? Where people are friendlier? There are many drug addicts and mentally sick people in the streets in downtown Vancouver. What about Melbourne? Where streets are cleaner? Does Melbourne have more bicycles? It definitely has more motorbikes. Is cold season sunnier and drier in Melbourne? Where people are more athletic (less fat)? Where parks are better? Where wages are higher. Minimum wage seems to be higher in Australia. In which city living expenses, including rents, are cheaper? Where is it cheaper to buy a house? Which city has better public transport? Is train network better in Melbourne? What is better: trams in Melbourne or trolleybuses in Vancouver? Where road traffic is less busy? Which city has more cycling lanes? Most sidewalks in Vancouver are made of concrete slabs with uneven seams between them. What about Melbourne? Asphalt or also concrete slabs or maybe sett? Where nature outside the city is better? Vancouver has mountains, lakes, forest, ocean near the city. Is Melbourne surrounded by desert? Where air is cleaner? Are there rainy months in Melbourne? Many people in Vancouver smoke marijuana. Is it legal to smoke tobacco and marijuana in the streets of Melbourne?

Vancouver has natural scenery and beauty such as magnificent mountains and lakes that Melbourne doesn't. There is a whale watch for tourists in Vancouver too. Australia generally is the flattest and driest Sun-kissed continent on Earth. Another big thing is: High level of UV rays in Australia so you have to put on cream whenever you go out. So if you like hiking and rock climbing, rafting - Vancouver is great. Melbourne weather can be 4 seasons in a single day! When it comes to artsy side, it is more relevant to compare Melbourne with Montreal (the fashion hub, with European high level culture and charm, amazing cuisine, music, museums, festivals, nightlife, etc.) .
