Thank you for doing this Steven! You are right, I have the book, I bring it to Kanikapilas often, but I don’t know the melodies to most of these songs. Great idea!

I've had this book for over 12 years and it was just collecting dust because I had never heard most of these songs let alone how to pronounce the Hawaiian words. So from eastern Canada's Maritime Province of New Brunswick . MAHALO Thank you very much.

Mahalo for this wonderful series. I find this a perfect gift, as someone who didn't grow up on the islands and have a hard time hearing the pronunciations, and is especially slow at capturing the rhythm of the strums with the rhythm of the melodies. I've had He Mele Aloha for years now, but with your tutorials, I'm now beginning to actually play and sing together. I can listen to your beautiful voice a thousand times (cause that's now long it takes me probably) and never get tired of listening and playing along. The stories behind the songs just make this even extra special. I'm going to learn every song you teach, and savor all of it. Again, Mahalo.

Aloha Steven! Mahalo nui for this new series ... I'm so excited for it to finally be here. The strum pattern was a revelation -it gives me your characteristic sound and of course I love that! I liked this song - am pretty familiar with 'Ulupalakua, both singing and playing. I've played and have sung many of the songs from He Mele Aloha and there doesn't seem to be a bad one in the bunch. I am partial to the old Hawaiian standards - I Kona, Kalama'ula, Hi'ilawe, Kōk'e, Kalena Kai, Pua Lilia, E Ku'u Morning Dew, Makee 'Ailana, Kaimana Hila, Meleana E, and of course any song that you do on your CD's. A real long shot would be Maunaleo. Thank you soooo much Steven for presenting this new series. You know I'll be following you!!!

Book has arrived. I really like the idea of working from this book. That way we can have this whole resource for awhile. Love that idea. Loved that you shared a vamp and ending. thanks for helping with special video of the chords and song words on screen. Just lovely! And thanks for all the positive feedback for us all! It feels great to have a resource. You did so much in under 20 minutes!!!! Song Request: Henehene Kou 'Aka!! But, honestly, I'd like to know what you want to share with us. So, I'll defer to any suggestions you have. Small request: when you say the Hawaiian the first time with no music would you consider pausing so we can say it outloud after you? Otherwise, listening while you play the whole song through is ultimately the most helpful. I love that you sing straight through the song so we have a full song to practice. Maybe, would you also consider playing the whole thing through right at the start? That way when we practice over and over we can restart the video easier? Stick to what feels right to you... just small things I am thinking could help me. I apologize if this is too much feedback. ---> This could really change the quality and type of music that is currently played at most "JAMS" across the ukulele clubs and I think it's very exciting.

Great version. I think I'm most intimidated by the various strums! The Hawaiian strums are so wonderfully unique. You made this one easy. Thank you! I don't know why it took me so long but I just found your channel here. I've learned Na Ka Pueo but I can't seem to find the right strum for it. I'll search your channel and maybe find it? Mahalo! Oh yeah and one last thing...learning the correct olelo pronunciation. As a person who did not grow up in the Islands but a frequent visitor I know I will never get the accents 100%. I'm trying not to let that stop me though. Such a lovely language so hard to get just right if you don't grow up hearing it spoken or are not a (literally) student of the language.
@StevenEspaniola4 жыл бұрын
Aloha! So glad you found my channel! Don't worry about the slow process for pronunciation...it'll come eventually. Some of the most notable and prominent educators in 'olelo Hawai'i are not from Hawai'i, including my good friend Kaliko Beamer-Trapp. Maybe I'll do Na Ka Pueo on an upcoming episode ;)
