pgh carrol had easily the best take on commentary storylines . we need more interviews through like basic mingling kinda the way slime did at a few majors because with a rotating cast of characters and players there is more content not less.

okay i have two takes about commentary: first: the pendulum between narrative and analytical may well be swinging toward narrative right now, but I think commentary in general could be doing a MUCH better job with the very most basic analytical stuff that would bring in newer viewers, particularly the ones that are interested but not super knowledgeable yet. I've been watching/playing melee for like 6ish years, but my spouse always says she appreciates when commentators point out stuff that seems like basic knowledge for veterans, especially tech knowledge you get by playing the game. for example, the fact that puff gets a free rest on spacies if the don't DI upthrow - this characterizes that matchup, and it's pretty digestible knowledge, but nobody ever mentions it because it seems too obvious. maybe it's last stock fox puff, fox at 0 and puff at high percent, you might hear a commentator say "(puff player) really looking for a grab here," but my spouse has no way to know WHY that's the case unless someone says it. I've heard ludwig occasionally explain this kind of thing on his own tournaments because he knows he's broadcasting to non-veterans. it doesn't have to be "marth is a human type character, he's got a big sword" but even just explaining terminology would be helpful I think. some stuff like "edgeguarding" is self-explanatory but "tomohawk" isn't. second: I think it would be cool for commentators to make a name for themselves in pairs. I get that this is logistically more difficult but it kind of feels like this is how most well-established commentators came into the spotlight anyways. scar+toph and brandon+phil are the obvious ones, but even like vish+chillin or like, ludwig+slime (walt and radar maybe? I don't totally know all the history) people who already know each other and get along well are likely to have good commentary synergy, obviously, but I also think commentary pairs are more 'marketable' than individual commentators, both as a prospect for big tournaments to bring on and also for the audience to remember. obviously once commentators are established they can operate in different pairs, and all the best ones are really versatile, but in terms of being on the come-up I think working in pairs is a good strategy.

Junebug and Jorge are an awesome pair. Too chummy for important sets, but a lot of fun. I haven't seen Chroma and Jack commentate together but that would be sick

I really like this type of feedback and thank you for sharing it! The second part is certainly something I'd love to see more of as well. It can get complicated due to travel availability but more staple duos would be great for consistent viewers.

crazy how hard it is for these 2 smashers to understand that just because you are okay with getting sick doesn't mean that u are free to expose everyone around u to it. masking protects other people more than yourself. it is not hypocritical to require masks at a tournament and then offer OPTIONAL AFTER HOURS events that do not require masks.
