I’m 52 and my teenage daughter introduced me to this song. I am so glad young women have music like this reminding them of their worth in a very powerful way. The lessons here are ones I wished I had learned much younger. To all you Gen Z girls, never compromise your integrity or your soul for a man. It’s time we held them accountable. The only flaw I will point out in this song is how gendered it is. If it was more gender neutral then I think a more wider audience would relate to this. (Like male and non binary victims.) Yeah, most predators are men but we shouldn't forget that alot of predators are women too.
@arandomcatheehee2 жыл бұрын
@@zelda7059 I think this song is specifically meant to be empowerment for women, especially since we still have men in power trying to quiet us and take our rights away. Example: Texas wants to make abortion completely illegal AND punishable with death sentence. Rape has a lower bail than abortions. In many places in the world, women are still heavily oppressed.
@oreos.mikewheeler4422 жыл бұрын
@@zelda7059 Your comment is probably my favorite one here. I love this song but the only dislike I have is that it seems to make only girls relate to this. Even though it doesn't say every boy is a predator, I would like it to have girls, boys, AND non-binary people.

I realized one of the reasons I love this. Her enunciation and it almost sounds like a Broadway song if the chorus didn't repeat i could hear this in a musical. ALSO she's an alto and we need to normalize people who can sing don't need to hit soprano notes and still sound fire and make an impact.

As someone who got groomed and has the frustrating experience of said groomer avoiding accountability like the plague, the part 2:58 - 3:17 hits SO hard for me. This entire song makes me feel so much less alone in my resentment and anger towards him. Everyone who's experienced any type of sexual assault, abuse, grooming, etc, is SO strong. And after reading the comments I can confidently say that, we survived hell, and for that we should have the right to feel any emotions we can towards our abusers with no strings attached or others telling us to "forgive and forget". It should be, and IS, up to you how you handle your recovery process - not forgiving whoever hurt you does NOT make you a bad person and it is NOT required to heal. Because it is YOUR choice on how you cope/recover. And nobody from an outside perspective has the right to tell you that it's wrong.

Thank the gods I’ve never been SAed, but I was made to feel extremely uncomfortable and vulnerable by a much older man. I was fourteen years old, maybe 4`9`` and 100 LBS soaking wet. I’m also disabled, and as such I took a certain bus full of other kids who couldn’t take the normal bus to school. It came right to my door to pick me up. The bus driver saw me in a very modest sundress. Like when I say modest, I mean knee length dress with a jacket on over it and a ribbon in my hair. I looked like a little girl, and he kept making these extremely uncomfortable comments about how pretty I looked, telling me that the boys would be all over me, how he’d, “See you tomorrow, beautiful lady/pretty girl,” and how I should, “Stop biting those beautiful lips.” It took me crying into a friend’s chest for an hour to be able to report him, and even then he wasn’t fired. I was just moved to a different bus. Until he quit, whenever I passed him, he’d call out, “Hey sweetie,” to me whenever I passed by his bus, and he later went on to comment about how suggestively another disabled friend, who is younger than me, looked in the clothes they were wearing. For reference, they were literally just wearing shorts and a T-shirt. I finally worked up the courage to tell my older brothers about it, and they told me it wasn’t sexual harassment because he didn’t tell me he wanted to have sex with me, and started getting all up in arms defending the adult man who told a fourteen year old girl who looked about twelve years old how beautiful her body was. I feel sick to my stomach just thinking about him, and I still remember his full name and now can only associate the first name with bad things. Though it was nice later on that my bus drivers after him knew exactly what he’d said and one of them outright told me, “You have every right to be angry. Nobody should ever talk to a young girl like that.” It was especially validating because he had previously been friends with the other driver until he learned what he’d done, at which point he stopped respecting him completely and wouldn’t even allow him near the bus when I got off and on. That’s the driver who’s name I wish I remembered

This song reminds me of one of my dear friends. He got into a relationship that was in short, heavily abusive. He deserved so much better then what he was getting and finally was able to stand up for himself after he realized that this person was being absolutely horrible to him. I know this song has a predominantly female role but it can truely happen to anyone. My best friend who I am now proud to call my lover are as happy as can be and are both getting over our scars from past relationships to help better one another and make a life for ourselves in which we are both comfortable. Cause that’s what love should be, a union that can be associated with both comfort and contentment.

You're right! Personally I don't think this song is necessarily tall is necessarily targeting only women women. Women and men alike go through abusive situations whether it be Physically or sexually. I would say this is a great song but what bothers me the most is how People think only women can go through abusive situations. I've gone through abusive situations myself And as much as I'm happy to hear people standing up for themselves people also have to realize that men go through hardships and abusive situations. I just wish more people realized that.

Huh (aah) Well don't come round here with that If we review through your phony excuses I bet it won't change the past Closed for the weekend Don't you apologize I know you don't mean it I quit Here's to the "no"s To the "I think you should go"s To the leave his ass alone's To the hanging up thе phone's To the no man can demand my body, my spirit, my lovе Ooh Here's to the "no"s To the "walk yourself on home"s To the keeping on my clothes To the highs without the lows To the no man can demand my body, my spirit, my love Ooh I've had enough So you're claiming you're a martyr, what? Like I don't have a clue Too bad I'm smarter, be discreet's a starter I'm staring right at the proof Closed for forever (uh-huh) I'm done with shutting up I've learned a lot better Listen Here's to the "no"s To the "I think you should go"s (I think you should go) To the leave his ass alone's To the hanging up the phone's To the no man can demand my body, my spirit, my love Ooh Here's to the "no"s To the "walk yourself on home"s To the keeping on my clothes To the highs without the lows To the no man can demand my body, my spirit, my love, love, love If you're so mature now Then I think it's time you grow up Admit you did it We all know you did it And yet you still gaslight me up You are such a flame out Your only drive left's in the bed (your only drive left's in the bed) I don't deserve this And for your next girlfriend You need to treat her with respect Here's to my girls Standing up for what they're worth Yeah, you know who run the world I am ready to be heard No man can demand my body, my spirit, my love (my body, my spirit, my love) Ooh And for the boys Who don't care who they destroy Told us "NO" was not a choice You cannot silence our voice No man can demand our bodies, our spirits, our love We've had enough

Even though it's a song about bad men hurting people, I vibe with this on a different level. I'm a trans man who's only been free of an abusive mother for almost a year, and all of my life up to my escape last year was hell. She was discreet, she was good at hiding it and tricking people to turn on me if I tried to use my voice. Even took coming out to my grandfather who passed away by doing it for me without my knowledge. I could write a book how wicked she was. I lost my best friends because of her, and even though I have been struggling... I've been thriving. I have moments where I miss the "safety" of being under her thumb, but then I remember how bad it was... This song is going to be one of a few that I listen to when I think about what I went through.

This song gives me the vibes of what I feel towards my Father(change some of the words of course, but the "If your so mature now, then I think it's time you grow up, admit you did it, we all know you did it, and yet you still gas light me up, your are such a flam out" reminds me of him trying to abuse us, and how he acts like he is so much better than us

I wish that this song was around when I was going through my 20's. I can't help but think I wouldn't have gone through some of the things I did if it was. It speaks to the inner rage that wants to burn and shout out to the rest of the world about respecting my self worth, that no means no, and I don't need false words of love and excuses. I love and respect this song for what it means to myself and to everyone else.

I really hope an instrumental of this is released in the future, I was recommended this during some intense spousal abuse and I have both cried and sung triumphantly to it. Thank you so much for putting these feelings into words, and into a beautiful arrangement at that. If I’m missing any instrumentals and if anyone reads this lmk! I really want to cover it as the first song I would’ve covered in a year but I’ve only found one shoddy version. I may learn it on the piano and play it. I want to express all this pain I’m feeling and put it out there whether or not people in my life believe the abuse has been real.
