The broken dragon sword was the first sword we see Meliodas use in the series. It is actually a key disguised as a sword and was originally used to open up the demon realm. It played a major role in the series, and plus Meliodas looked badass slaying villains with only half a sword. It foreshadowed how strong he really would be if he got his lostvayne.
