I think it was just her time to go. She removed her necklace before a few seasons back, left it on the table and went to sleep without it with no ramifications. So I don't think she chose to die, I think she was finally allowed to die as her mission was over. Thoros revived Beric until he could serve his purpose then he died, Beric was resurrected until he served his purpose as well. This was simply her surviving until she was no longer needed

Melisandre knew she would die in Westeros in season 7. She said as much in her conversation with Varys at Dragonstone. Being as old as she was could not have been easy. Seeing everyone you knew and loved either killed or die of old age while you kept living a life of servitude to the Fire God would have been difficult after a time. Maybe her death was her final reward for her long life of service. The Fire God finally allowed her to be released from a life of no family, no friends, no loved ones and no goals except for the ones that the Fire God wanted her to do. I would think that death would seem like a blessing to her in the end. Her Valar Dohaeris is over. May Melisandre have peace at last.

Why why why do people insist on debating who is 'good' and 'evil'? Martin has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't trade in such shallow archetypes. I don't think of the White Walkers as evil. It's all about perspective. To the Night King's creators, the invading humans were evil monsters who committed genocide and had no respect for Life as a whole. So the Children acted to protect their own interests like any group of people would do. They created a weapon that would give humans a taste of their own medicine. If the White Walkers are evil, then humans started the 'evil'. Similarly, the Lord of Light is above such ideas of good and bad. He exists as a opponent to the Great Other, but both of them are equally valid aspects of the cycle of existence. Life and death, summer and winter, light and dark... they exist in tandem with each other. Supposedly Bran was a servant of the Great Other, according to Melisandre. And yet they fought on the same side in the end. I've never heard a very rewarding or insightful conversation about Westeros that was concerned with subjective judgements of who is 'good' and who is 'evil'. In my opinion, the only characters who come close to evil are the humans who rape, torture and murder. The White Walkers are not evil, any more than winter or death is evil. The Great Other and the Lord of Light, like the moon and the sun, like night and day, like ice and fire, they just are.

Her death was my WTF moment. The way everyone talked, including her, is that she had some major purpose like a glorious self sacrifice or something. Not just light a few fires then walk away collapsing to her death. So, I think her purpose was to remind Arya that she would shut brown eyes, green eyes and BLUE eyes, giving Arya the confidence she needed to kill the NK.

I think the idea is that her magic sustains her but it hurts her to do so. Constant pain. Thoros kept saying things like that, about how nothing happens without a reason from the Lord of Light. He said it a LOT to The Hound, then Sandor saw the vision in the flames when the Brotherhood was on their way North to Eastwatch. If this is true, then it really spreads to the entire Brotherhood, including The Hound, being Arya’s protectors throughout the entire series. They weren’t going to let anyone hurt her, not the Lannister’s after her family had been murdered, not The Hound, not anyone, and Beric gave his last life to keep her away from the Wights overrunning Winterfell. I also think it was “in the flames” for her to venture to Braavos, now we know why with the closing eyes speech from Mel so long ago. Arya was able to learn valuable tricks and skills from The House of Black and White that she was able to use against the Night King. She became a wildcard he never saw coming (literally); he already knew about Bran, Jon and Dany but he had never encountered Arya before until she plunged that Valyrian Cat’s Paw dagger into his belly/ chest.

She removed her necklace at least 2 other times during the series.... 1) when she went to bed & reverted to her true self. @guitarnoob9893 жыл бұрын
Her power came from her faith, not necessarily the necklace. The necklace, more specifically the ruby, was more of a symbolic manifestation of her faith in the lord of light. That's why she didn't age when she took it off in the bath. She aged when she took it off to sleep (after killing shireen) because she started to have doubts in the lord of light i.e. why make her believe Stannis was the reincarnation or Azor, only to end up dying. After the night king is defeated, she took of the necklace and died because she realizes that her purpose has been fulfilled, and there is no longer any need for her to keep on living.

To me her death was just a testament of her faith. More than anything she was a servant to the Lord of Light. So long as he had need of her, she would walk the earth. Everything she beloved, everything she did, was for him and his will. She didn’t live for herself. She had no real desires but to serve. So the fact that she served her purpose for the Lord of Light, death was the only option for her. She had no other reason to live. Had maybe her faith it been so strong and had she maybe wanted something, she may have wanted to live and kept he necklace on. But she didn’t want money or power. She didn’t want love or children. She didn’t want anything, save to die. Unless, she couldn’t die and the necklace wasn’t a way to keep her alive but just keep her young. I don’t know. I took it as it kept her young but also kept her alive. Otherwise why even remove it. If she was going to die either way at the end of the battle, she would have just fell to her death. But the fact that she removed her collar to me meant that she had to. Unless, she wanted to die as her “true” self. Too many possibilities lmao.

In the beginning I hated Melisandre. And of course this hate intensified when she burned Shireen. But she always fascinated me as a character. And especially after she came to Castle Black and her belief was way nore humble I really began to like her. Stannis' loss and Davos confronting her really brought her down to earth and she started to see through the illusions she had for her belief. One of my favorite scenes from Seven 7 was when she was talking to Varys on that cliff, because they are both great actors, fascinating characters und really important in this "acting in the shadows"genre. I was really happy to see her, even though I did expect her to bring other Red priestesses from Volantis with her or the Fiery Hand even. But nontheless it was great seeing Melisandre in this amazing episode and having the focus on her quite often. If we say other characters did redeem themselfs like Theon then we definetly need to say the same about Mel. And she had a fantastic end for her. She came to peace with herself and the world. Sold as a slave, used and humiliated, she found hope in her belief, only to become a fanatic. But then she realised that her belief doesn't need her to burn children or kill with shadowmagic. So she became humble. She brought together Ice and Fire (and did we hear that phrase ever before in the show?). And now she brought Arya to being the absolute MVP this episode. Goodbye Melisandre! You were a great addition to this show and hopefully you found your way into the light. I also liked Carice van Houten's personality and knew her before I started watching GoT from her performance in the Movie "Black Book".

Hm, interesting Dean. Here's my take: I don't believe the God's of Westero or Essos are real. Magic is real, and there are religions that sprang up around the magic users. However, where you see the guiding hand of a God or gods I see people using magic and their influence over their followers, and things just happening. I'm not sure that we'll ever be able to know if the gods are real or not, but that would be an epic scene; if Jon Snow and Danny get to speak directly to the gods... which reminds me Dean do you think the Lord of Light is the only God or is the Drowned God real as well as The Seven?

Melisandre's faith in the Lord of Light was shaken I think and she suffered enormously following the death of Stannis but she did perhaps fulfill her role with renewed faith when she brought Jon Snow back to life. She gained purpose and saw that she had a role in defeating the Night King. She had served her purpose, flawed as it sometimes was, and chose to end her life as her ultimate goal had been achieved. Following the defeat of Stannis and the burning of his daughter, she was not quite the same again as she almost seemed to lack confidence in her understanding of the Lord of Light's purpose.
@malindasmith34965 жыл бұрын
I honestly felt the Milisandra story line is the easiest to follow. She has a mission. She completed it and it was then time for her to die. If you think about it she is a huge reason Arya followed the right path. “What to we say to the God of death?”
@siphiwokuhlekhumalo98355 жыл бұрын

I think where Mel went wrong WAS her purpose. She wanted to serve Azhor Ahai, and travelled across the world to find him. She served but never succeeded in getting him the throne, burned many as sacrifices, but in the end she was SO wrong! Everything she had seen and done was for nothing. To my mind it wasn't the Lord commanding her to do all these things, it was her own hubris in believing that what she saw and did was absolutely correct. Even if she was forcing it. Instead of asking "where should I go and do to be most helpful?", she read her visions and interpreted them as she chose. Then she was humbled, and she learned. That's how she was able to make her last hours count.

I agree, she stayed alive until her purpose or mission was over. She knew her time was coming, and once all the pieces were set and ready, she returned to Winterfell. Also, I’m glad Davos was able to see her die. He was like a witness to everything she did, good or bad, and he also got justice for Shereen and a better understanding of Melisandre’s faith/beliefs. I wonder if Davos will still have doubts on the lord of light after everything he saw? :) One more thing, the look that Melisandre had when she was walking away and removing her necklace was like a look of relief and accomplishment. Probably one of the most ‘positive’ and satisfying endings to a character arc.

Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen is still Azor Ahai and his weapon is Lightbringer, Or in literal terms Arya Stark. Jon Armed her, gave her needle and thus began her journey to become an agent of The Many Faced God. If Jon doesn't give Arya Needle, Ned never finds her training with it and doesn't call for cerio Ferrell, Arya never survives to meet jaqen and become a faceless assassin, therefore she never ends up north and never kills the night king. *Takes breath*

From something that I say in life (life depends on death) I think the lord of light and the many faced god are either the same or yin/yang counters. What if the lord of light, is the same god as the many face god, where this god shows himself to people in different ways, and brings about a different perception in people of how they see him? To some he's the many faced god who bestows his followers with the power to morph into others, to do his bidding, and to the magical people, they see him as the 'Lord of Light' who's the ambient god who resides in the flames, and shows you visions and prophecies in order for his followers to do his bidding. There's this underlining, unsettling, uncertainty with both gods... you can't decide if they are evil or good...

I’m completely torn in two, the first time experiencing The Battle for Winterfell is was crazy and just a lot of tension and emotions. But afterwards reflecting on the episode and rewatching the episode two more times, it got me thinking..the narrative to what has been building up to for 7 seasons didn’t happen and you can’t tell me Davos, Jamie, Brienne, Greyworm, Sansa or Tyrion are that lucky and have the best armor. Davos isn’t a fighter, he says it more than once. Jamie admitted he’s not the fighter he use to be. Brienne’s story is pretty much complete and she got taken down twice. Greyworm was in the front and was is two crazy battles trying to keep the weights back, there’s no explanation how he got out of that. Sansa and Tyrion we’re trapped in the crypts with the dead and nothing happened to them?? They had daggers and didn’t try to save anyone? Arya killing the NK was BA!! But how is she princess who was promised? Nothing about the prophecy points to her, only Melisandre’s prophecy about her shutting many eyes which make sense because she trains to be an assassin. Idk a lot of plot holes and a lot of Hollywood clichés, this GOT, this show always pushes the limit and has always made us feel like no one is safe. Honestly, I have no idea how they’re going to end this.

Her power came from her faith, not necessarily from the necklace. The necklace, more specifically the ruby, was more of a symbolic manifestation of her faith in the lord of light. That's why she didn't age when she took it off in the bath. She had absolute faith at that time. She aged when she took it off to sleep (after killing shireen) because she started to have doubts in the lord of light i.e. why make her believe Stannis was the reincarnation or Azor, only to end up dying. After the night king is defeated, she took of the necklace and died because she realized that her purpose has been fulfilled, and there is no longer any need for her to keep on living.

In logic terms it had to be Arya and the reasons are many. First she had been trained since pre-adolescence with Fiorio Fiorel then she was trained psychologically by the "Hound" aka. Sandor Cleagane in the road. The Hound thought her to kill to survive and to not hesitate in doing it. She learn from a season soldier the ways of surviving in the road. Then she learn to be a stealth killer by Jacken Haggar the faceless man, rituals and secret martial arts. All that said, it was a given that Arya was going to kill the knight King of the death. So, I don't know why are some disappointed that it wasn't Jon but he was distracting the death dragon in order to let Arya pass to god tree and to Brandon.

Some people didn't like the episode? Understandable, not because of the episode, but because of their unfulfilled expectations. When anything in life doesn't meet your expectations, then the problem is not with that person, place, or thing. The problem is with YOU! Having high expectations, or any expectations at all is a sign of immaturity and an exaggerated idea of one's importance. Mature people are humble because life has taught them that the world doesn't revolve around them. They take life, and all the things that come with that life, including movies and TV shows, as they are and accept them, or change them if they are able to. Entertainment is designed for one thing, and that is to entertain, not meet your expectations. Go out an produce your own show and see if you can do better.

I 100% agree with you. That is exactly how I interpreted it. It looks like she had been waiting and looking for years for the signs for the chosen one to come and felt she was the one destined to find him/her. And when that finally happened her time was now over. It’s kinda the same Reason Bran doesn’t tell everyone what will actually happen, because I feel he can see the future in vision . Because when someone knows to much about their destiny it affects their decision and can ultimately make wrong choices. Example: what if Mel saw in a vision that she would be the one to find The prince/ princess that was promised and with that knowledge is why she felt so confident that she was right with Stannis to the point of making bad decision and not reading the vision properly. One thing I have learned about the writing of this show is they very much tell us that being over confident in your self and self purpose can be a down fall. That sometimes we need to be humble and see the purpose of others no matter how week, small, or any disabilities. Hence Jon our sword wielding fighter hero type not being the one to kill the NK but the plan of a cripple boy with his little sister the one everyone even at that point completely underestimated. Proof: Season 7 sparing scene with Brianne. Everyone watch Sansa, little finger, and even Brianne her self underestimated her, even Jon kinda joked about her and needle. “ did you ever have to use it. “ Gendry even did it until she threw all the knives at the pole, and Davos in this last episode was stunned when he saw her in action on the wall. I think that is why I truly love the Idea it was Arya . Even the NK himself underestimated her at his own demise. Totally happy with it.

Could you try and make an origin life story of Melisandre? Explaining how she came to be a red witch or came to obtain the magic she possesses, and possibly how old she was or where she comes from? Because her character basically has been a mystery across 8 seasons and we still don't know much about her and it's a shame because her story arc would be a lot more epic and her death would have been more meaningful. Because even though she served the lord of the light, she stepped on many people in order to do that and that's all we see her as, as a character who used her magic and her faith to fulfil a prophecy, and towards the end aid in bringing down an enemy. It just seems like that's all her character was, but I can't help but wonder if there's more to her, we only got a glimpse of that with that one episode (where she reveals her true self) Did she ever get married? have a child? or did she lose someone she was close to in the past which has lead to the bitter-sweet melancholy she carries with her? I sense a deep loss or sadness in her which was never resolved or accepted, that's why we see her un-bothered expression when she appears it's like she's lost part of herself in some way.. to be the women she came to be, like a ghost of herself.
