To my ear, these four have been together long enough, and together evolved far enough that, like the Coltrane quartet, they are now speaking their own language. Ms. Aldana has done her homework going to school to the greats that preceded her, and synthesized a voice of her own. The composing she does with Lage Lund is key to this, but the unit of the whole quartet is essential--as it was the Coltrane four. She has in my view come into her own in the past two or three years. And can now, as it were feel/think, with her saxophone. Technique and vision are equal parts now.
