These serials are riveting! Amazing that 60 years on television shows can't build this sort of suspense. Eagerly waiting for the next chapter!

Great programme, excellent acting and a 37 year old Brian Wilde, who looks surprisingly youthful in this. Tony Britton always looked old.

It'll be good to compare this earlier version to the 1974 version of Melissa with Peter Barkworth in the Tony Britton role.

Felix says, "Bang on" sounds like echoes of Ian Carmichael - Lord Peter Wimsey lingo from the 30's...anyone know who composed the ultra cool 60's mood music? Were the "Library" music outfits providing this type of music this early, Like Bruton et el...I saw it says John Woodiwiss Sound dude, but he just contracts the music, like Stanley Black composed the music for "Too Many Crooks" with Woodiwiss as sound agent... peace out...

So right. I'm a wee bit stressed at the moment, and these lying so-called friends of his are driving me mad. 😂

This was remade for German TV in 1966, by the BBC in 1974 and by Channel 4 (with Adrian Dunbar and Julie Walters) in 1997. The last version was updated and considerably altered by Alan 'Boys from the Blackstuff' Bleasdale. Durbridge saw it soon before he died. He liked it but confessed he was as baffled as anyone by the plot!

Yes have seen that a few times wasn't aware there was an earlier version. Peter Barkworth plays the lead as rsther bemused and bumbling - Tony Britton so far is more confused and annoyed. These Durbrudge dramas are always great viewing, thanks for posting

I'm enjoying these programs, but I can't help but be amused by periods like from 12:22 to 14:30 - "What can we do that sounds like solving a mystery, but is actually just filling three minutes of airtime?"
