We must forgive, and be better than those that hate us without even knowing us, but if we allow ourselves to forget how recently and needlessly this occurred, we risk the tragedy being repeated. We can’t live in a state of fear or hate, but even in Chicago, in a predominantly gay friendly neighborhood, it was only a couple years ago a gay man was beaten up at the gas station across the street from a police station (no one was ever charged). As grateful as I am for the strides we’ve made in acceptance and equal rights, it can all too quickly slip away if we get too complacent or comfortable. There are still far too many people who consider being gay a choice and/or a sin and consider us second class citizens. Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now.
