Learn how to prune a blueberry bush for a larger harvest. I walk you through pruning blueberries, no matter if you're pruning a young blueberry bush or you're needing to prune a mature blueberry bush. The best time of year to prune blueberries is in late winter or early spring before the buds break, when you can clearly see what is a blossom bud and what's a leaf bud.

@@dalah4053 Absolutely. I’ve thought that so many times. Some of my favorite KZbinrs just say what they’re there to say-they deliver great information with no unnecessary music. Perky, upbeat music doesn’t really make the presentation more interesting or professional sounding. Often, it does the opposite.

Tool Tip: Flip the pruners upside down, so the blade curves downard, when cutting stems from the right side of the branch. Otherwise the sharp side of the blade is further away from the edge you are cutting. It also allows the blade to cut more evenly by holding the blade at the best angle for an inside cut. Even a sharp blade will tend to jam more often when the pruning blade cuts from the outside.

From google - Annual vegetables that can accompany blueberries include radishes (Raphanus spp.), potatoes (solanum spp.), peppers (Capsicum spp.) or endive (Cichorium spp.), while the herb parsley (Petroselinum spp.) makes a decorative and useful companion to blueberries as well. Do blueberries and strawberries grow well together? Both strawberries and blueberries are easy to grow garden fruits that you can plant once and reap from for many years. They both can act as beautiful landscape plants and they can be grown together. Strawberries act like ground cover to keep the soil around the blueberry shrubs moist and weed-free.

I have never pruned my 8 year old bushes! A good education in pruning my blueberries in PNW. I missed the timeframe to prune this year but next year will I'll be taking care of them. Thank you for answering other questions regarding the care of blueberries like mulching and what not.

Hello, I'm wondering if that's mulch you piled up at the base of all the bushes? I'm new to gardening and caring for blueberry bushes. All our trees and bushes (including our blueberry bushes) on our property were planted in soil mixed with crushed stone. Not really sure why, maybe to keep weeds out. It's impossible to change this now as a lot of the tree's and bushes are 50-80 years old. We considered adding more crushed stone to cover the area and keep weeds out but I haven't a clue of whether that is a bad idea? Lmk your thoughts. Thanks

Crushed stone isn't going to break down and help feed the plant so I personally would pick a different medium.

Yay! Thanks for this informational video...the yay because I just pruned my blueberries last week (about 11 year old bushes and they tower over me) and really kinda winged it...I thought it seemed a bit tedious, because I took a lot of time to thoughtfully go over each bush and each branch, cutting out the obvious dead wood and then going over each individual remaining branch and pruning off tips and stems that were dead or sad looking. These blueberry bushes were on the property when we bought it, and they were about 4 years old then. I had seen a decline in production over the years, so I went pretty hard on the cuts this year, even lopping off much of what was healthy grow, but up at about 8 feet. Since I can't harvest anything up that high and I thought those longer stretches of growth might be what are zapping production energy out of the bushes, most of them got a good cut (I left a few taller ones, since I know the birds come around and grab what I can't reach - nothing goes to waste!). So, again, thanks for the visual of what and how to do. Turns out that for the most part, intuition led me in a good direction. Now, if only I can get over my fear of "cutting too much"! I know it's healthier for the plants and things come back more vigorous and lush with growth...but boy, does it make me shake in my boots! :)

So glad you found it helpful and you're putting some new life into those bushes. My folks have plants that are 40+ years old and they're still producing so you should have lots of years left in them.

Your audio suffers a bit from the background music around the 8:45 mark. You'd do well in future videos to eliminate ALL background noise as much as possible, not add to it.... Otherwise, a very informative video !!!

It seems like it would be more efficient to cut the large pieces down low first, then work your way up.

Very thorough and informative though it's hard to see some of the details that need snipping off. . overall excellent video. The music is never enjoyed by me. And true of many videos it's too loud and distracting. I really learned a lot though. Thanks.

I planted 2 blueberry bushes and 1 has died. Do I need to have 2 blueberry bushes or will the one bush still produce?
@MelissaKNorris
@MelissaKNorris 5 жыл бұрын
The one will still produce but you won't get as many berries from it as you would if you had another pollinator (another blueberry bush of a different variety) nearby. So if you feel like production is low, consider bringing in a new plant :)
