Melissa, I started organic chem last week. I received a B in inorganic chem a few weeks ago and was so happy. Then I got in this class and I came home a ball of anxiety. I didn't feel like I understood it at all, and my professor is not the "step by step" kind of teacher. Which my last chem professor was. And he would write clear notes during lectures via a PowerPoint. Again, not this professor. I felt ok as I was going to reach out to my favorite tutor with whom I have been working almost daily for a solid semester. Well to my surprise, I received an auto-reply to my email to the tune of " Shayna is no longer with us." I wanted to die! So after procrastinating out of a fear of failure, because I am so lost, I found your videos tonight. You SAVED MY LIFE AND MY MIND! I am so happy I found you. I am on my 4th video tomorrow about putting together the structures I am asked for (Alkanes) and I have a quiz on it tomorrow morning. I not only feel so much better, I feel ready. Thank you for your attention to detail and your clear love for understanding. You are an angel!

Alkenes and Alkynes are named in the same way, except Alkenes will have double bonds present and Alkynes will have triple bonds present! For anyone asking :) My first Ochem exam tomorrow... wish me luck!

Ethyl has 2 carbon while methyl has only 1, and if you'll look carefully the methyl "1carbon" is attached in the longest carbon chain which is not a part of methyl so you can differ it as methyl.

Great video! I have a question, time stamp: 5:31, when we did step 1 and labeled the structure with orange numbers, we had substituents at 2 & 3, so why did we later on choose to number it in a different way to have substituents at 3 & 4?

When counting the longest carbon chain, (step 1 in the cases) how do you know where to start on the substituents on counting the carbons? What would be a great tip to indicate where to start that?

Not sure if I fully understand your question. Are you asking how do you find the longest carbon chain? Or how do you know which way to number the longest carbon chain either left to right or right to left?

It depends on your substituents if you number from left to right and the substituents have the lowest number then that is correct. But if you number from right to left and the substituents have the lowest number there than that way is correct. Overall if the way you number the chain results in the substituents having the lowest number then that is the correct way.
