We stayed for 2 weeks leaving in AirBnB to understand the life in Canada. I am a lot older than you and my Hubby is Gp with 20 years experience in the Uk. Melissa, if you have not already done so, before you move to Canada, get your British Passport. However, it was a good idea you went to Canada to active whatever needs to be done and to get a feel for the lay of the land. I have never been to Canada, I hear it is safer than the states where I have been several times. However they are very liberal in Canada and children have rights literally.
