Mellbreak A La'al Scramble In't Western Fells (The Lake District)

Mellbreak has been likened (by Alfred Wainwright and others) to the shape of an upturned boat, having north and south tops of roughly equal height and a wide flat depression in between. On the eastern side the steep slopes run down directly to the shore of Crummock Water. Low Ling Crag, a rocky projection into the lake, is a continuation of outcrops higher up. Other crags rim the depression between the two tops.
The southern boundary is formed by Scale Beck and its tributary Black Beck. Mellbreak has a third much lower top overlooking this steep sided valley, Scale Kott (1,109 ft). At the head of Black Beck is the connection to Starling Dodd, running south west from Scale Knott. This could hardly be considered a ridge in walking terms, since it begins at the foot of an 800 ft scree slope on the northern flank of Starling Dodd.
To the west of Mellbreak is the marshy valley of Mosedale, its beck flowing north to Loweswater village. On the other side is the parallel ridge of Hen Comb. The northern end of Mellbreak rises direct from the valley behind the village, precipitous like a sand castle on a flat beach. From this vantage point its steep gabled profile is an arresting sight. The successive rock tiers of White, Dropping and Raven Crags complete the picture.

Cracking walk that Andy. I wouldn't want to come down that way for sure. What a view of Whiteside & Grasmoor, superb or what! The view down Crummock Water and Buttermere to Fleetwith Pike is like the view from Rannerdale Knotts but from t'other side. Two little fells that give super epic views. Great stuff, Andy. I must admit I'm not a fan of the screes on the north end either! I remember last time I went up it, we walked alone Mosedale and went up between the two summits, zipped out to the north one and then walked over the south top to Scale Knott. You're right, that viewpoint is so beautiful and peaceful. We then walked back down the Crummock Water side... years ago now, so that was a lovely reminder of a cracking wee hill, thank you.

Nice hike around here andy still got these to have a go at myself love this area like my favourite part of the lakes totally agree hang onto that drone until it gets calmer or you will be buying another 😂 shame the weather this year like hopfully it gets better for us all I quite liked the viewing point there where you were saying not many folk would go here as I defo for sure will when I get the chance nice hyper lapses there also love the cloud when they white and bushy just hate the devils when they grey and gloomy hahaha brilliant as always mate would of loved to hear what they were on about at the beginning going up 😂

Thanks Butchy Lad...update with me Drone...last walk on Tuesday (perfect conditions) the bloody remote packed in working thankfully I'd got the drone back first...remote has been sent off for repair 🙄 But good news I had a mate selling a mini 2 (4K) with the extra battery's and stuff for £200 what a bargain it's only got 2hr flight time on and hasn't be registered to any account so I can also register it....good to have two... one as a spare if the others down for repair 😁👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks as always for watching and the feedback buddy 😊 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
