That’s why they were supposed to work together. The reason people don’t like Near is because he resembles the side of L that we see more in the series. Also Near is a lazily written/introduced character in the anime. He only gets 10 episodes, where as in the manga there is much more to him and he’s a lot more likeable and not just a wannabe L.

My Account the way I saw it was near and mello are one of L’s plans. I mean L did partly train them in wammy’s house and the wammy organization was created by watari and enhanced by L. Whether near and mello started with no background evidence on the Kira case or not, the fact that L planned for his own failure and had 2 excellent detectives ready to secretly continue the investigation should he be unable to continue was brilliant. The fact that L prepared for failure is what won him the war against Kira. Light’s power over the super natural and immoral manipulation tactics won the first battle and killed L, but L prepared for his own failure because he is an intelligent detective and excellent strategist. Light had the power and the smarts, but not the preparation. He was to cocky, manipulative, and egotistical. That is what caused L to find out Kira exists in the first place. Light never thought about losing because to him failure was unacceptable. To L, failure was a scenario he needed to prepare for. Light almost never prepared for failure of any kind, especially against opponents he found unworthy such as near. Light didn’t prepare for mikiami’s misstep during the final battle with near and therefore lost the game. Light was about to win, but the one mistake that was made by his companion is what cost him everything. L had a trustworthy back up he designed from the beginning, while light had to hastily form one once near already showed up in the form of mikami. Light got careless and cocky once L died, and didn’t even conceive the idea that L would use a legacy to continue fighting. Light would never have a legacy for Kira because he wanted to be the one true god himself. Light only cared for himself, while L ultimately cared for the justice of everyone else. It didn’t have to be him who solved the case, as long as the case was solved L wins. Light had a good plan in the form of mikami. The plan was good, but as we saw not full proof. It had a few holes that a intellect like near and sheer power like mello could pounce on to exploit. L prepared for the Kira task forces failure and had the wammy house as a back up plan. L’s cases are never about his own glory, only about testing his limits and saving lives. L’s planned legacy was brilliant. Even then it was a hard battle. Light almost beat near, but mello and near together proved to be too much for him. L’s strategy for his own failure is what lead light to his own demise. Light never understood the principle of preparing for complete defeat, and therefore struggled to keep up with mello and near who were in fact made by L. In the end it was L who defeated Kira, near even states this as he states “Together we can stand with L. Together we can surpass L. Together we can face the Kira who defeated L and beat him at his own game”

Mello and Near both surpassed L because that makes a perfect and better L when they work together. Mello was very much aggressive and spontaneous. He does not like to wait and takes very good decisions at the moment without wasting much time. He do participate in fights and escapes when needed. Near was too much of a calm but genius guy. He likes to be sure about first and accordingly take actions by calling his fellows. Near never goes out and take decisions in his own hand. He is more dependent on the SPK and it's members. L was the combination of the qualities of both Near and Mello. L was a genius and good at taking decisions and engaging in fights when necessary. The first move when L found out that Kira is in Japan by broadcasting the news only where he thinks has the highest possibility of Kira's residence. ( Near's quality ) GENIUS ! He immediately joined in his University as a student and keeps an eye on Light Yagami. L took Misa's phone in the right moment so that Light could not ask his real name by calling Misa. He is very cautious and risk taker with appreciateble amount of high intellect. ( Mello's quality ) UNPREDICTABLE ! Mello and Near are better than L in one of their qualities but L had a mix of both Near and Mello qualities but not as good as them. L was kinda complete and wasn't lacking any qualities that Near and Mello had but was not as extraordinary as Near and Mello. Near and Mello complete each other and becomes even stronger than L himself.

mello legit carried this investigation. getting his hands on the notebook by any means proved to be extremely helpful to the case. near ( and L most of the time) playing by the book feels like an unnecessary handicap. Light already has the unexplained supernatural power he shouldnt need any of his rivals to have restrictions.

He was necessary to act as a vanguard for Kira, as the notebook could be discarded and then become both an evident weapon in the investigation, and be passed on to somebody else completely. It would be high risk to even leave it in a locker somewhere - therefore, it *had* to remain in the use of somebody who could be trusted to carry on Kira's legacy.

They should’ve worked together. Both of them have traits from L that the other one doesn’t have what means if they would’ve worked together they would’ve been as good as or even better than L. Their detective traits compliment each other and together they would’ve had everything a good detective team needs.
