My heart is set on getting the mini. To get the compactness you sacrifice the real tapes but that's no great loss. I love that it looks as beautiful as the originals & it has huge posing power by proudly displaying the real Mellotron name on the front! Also instead of having to mess around changing bulky space consuming tape sets you have 100 sounds + card expansion.

If you really want to open up and expand the majestic power of the Mellotron M4000D, run it through an effects amp because reverb and the other settings are a Mellotron's best friend that adds depth and soul. (Fender, Peavy, and Marshall put out some really good effect amps to compliment the Mellotron). A volume and sustain pedal are must haves. To really take a walk on the wild side, run your Mellotron through some guitar effect pedals. I do. I bought my Mellotron in 2017 and I haven't even made a dent regarding all the different and beautiful sounds this gem can produce. I jumped on the grenade and added sound cards 02-03-04-05-06 and holy moly.......this beast is unstoppable. Marcus just came out with a sound card 07, and from what I understand, it's loops of the band sounds. There is a "high/low" setting too, but with all the KZbin Mellotron demo videos out there, nobody ever experiments with it. The low setting is a really cool feature. Rock on my friends.

@@maiastniki The Mellotron M4000D is probably the last keyboard I'll ever buy. I have a Yamaha synthesizer, a Roland Fantom-06 Synthesizer, and they are both really cool, but the Mellotron is light years beyond their sound variation capabilities. My only wish is that Marcus will come out with an 88 key Mellotron M4000D. On the bright side, with only 37 keys on the M4000D I've gotten really good at playing reverse chords. Rock on.

@@RioYugo definitley has. But note this isnt really a preset library in the sense that Kontakt is one. @@DaveyBoyCrocky OK! Yes it is possible to select sounds using MIDI but you have to do some setup ahead of time for it to be usable. There are 16 "playlists" (these respond to bank change commands) and each playlist has 32 "entries" (these respond to program change commands). By default it seems, ALL of the entries in ALL of the playlists are assigned the same two sounds so at first it didn't seem like it was working. (Mine had trombone and vibraphone for all entries). So I went through the first 3 entries of playlist 1 and assigned different pairs of sounds to each one and then using the program change commands on my MIDI keyboard I could move between the sounds. Also note that in the general setup MIDI menu, program and bank change can be enabled/disabled so if it's not working check those settings.

The Memotron is cheaper and definitely more authentic: the currently licensed Mellotron (which has nothing to do with Streetly, that is the people behind the original Mellotron) used just the master tapes, sometimes "correcting" them, while the Memotron guys sampled those tapes as played by actual vintage Mellotrons. They also offer many additional libraries: the Streetly 50th anniversary is superb. Even cheaper and easy to pirate is the M-tron, which is its software equivalent (almost on par with the hardware Memotron, the only difference would be the filters...). Last but not least, the "official" Mellotron can only load two virtual tapes at once, while the Memotron up to three, just like the original M400.
