【Pls look at the top comment first】This is a rare masterpiece of Mark Free for the theme of the film "Best Of The Best II". I edit this video clips to make tribute to one of my favourite martial arts films which I watched when I was a teen girl, classic and nostalgic with a burning heart of youth, especially the first (1989) and the second (1993) of these series. I'm not a violent girl in reality while a gentle music woman instead, but I play “Street Fighter” and used to have will to fight for honour like a warrior when I was a little kid so that I always show my interest in martial arts films like The Last Dragon, American Ninja, The Karate Kid, Best Of The Best and other more made in Hong Kong etc.
I know the stories about such kind of films especially those made in 1980s and 1990s, are always considered to be cliched for audience in the present times, but they have really made some people on fire if getting immersed in final fighting scenes, seeing the hero(es) defeat enemies to win his(their) victory and defend justice. In summary, most themes are about fighting for honour, fighting for vengeance, fighting for friendship, fight for justice and even fighting for love; there was no exception of Best Of The Best that I only watched the first and the second: three men became a team to fight for honour and win the fierce competition, then the teammates built strong friendship like brotherhood, but one bro was killed by the villain belonging to underword while the justice was denied. The other bros vowed to avenge the friend's death regardless of facing the deadly fight. The plot was simple but exciting.
The first and the second starred Eric Roberts, Phillip Rhee and deceased Chris Penn. Among the three actors, Eric Roberts is a Golden-Globe-Award-nominated actor and the old brother of Julia Roberts; Chris Penn is the younger brother of Sean Penn and Phillip Rhee, South Korean-American martial artist, is the producer of the series of “Best Of The Best” and portrays the hero Tommy Lee in all four films.
Another deep impression leaving on my mind is the soundtrack of Best Of The Best II with Mark Free's inspiring singsing “To Be Best Of The Best”. Mark Free, the big name should never be forgotten for every melodic rock fan even though she become Miss Marcie Free, the lead vocal of a brand-new female-fronted band Unruly Child. Stop judgment on gender dysphoria; "he" or "she", it doesn't matter. This is a great singer and an amazing lady, leaving numerous great hits of aor in the past 40 years of her music career, who has become best of the best symbolizing melodic rock forever.
If you love this theme tune, give her a like. Or if you are interested in martial arts, enjoy this film. The scenes are based on Karate in Best Of The Best I (1989) while all these became mixed martial arts in the second (1993) as you can find Karate, Taekwondo, Savate, Chinese Kung fu and some grappling games. IMHO, the Oriental fighting techniques seem to be more powerful and fierce because of the Kicking, Chokehold and Joint lock techniques which help the petite Asian fighter overcome the tall and hefty rival. Enjoy!
