I think the ability to detect not only sibilants, but ALL consonants would be a game changer in the post-production workflow. Imagine cleaning up the sound in RX7 and then using Melodyne's precise gain on consonants to get even more precise and intelligible dialogue.
@DerekRenfroe4 жыл бұрын
I'm a music producer, but I've had some luck with using the timing chopping tool, locating the beginning of the consonant, and moving it slightly in time depending on what syllabic sound you're trying to achieve. A lot of our perception of which consonant sound we're hearing is based on the speed of the consonant sound itself + its relation to other vowels. Of course it isn't possible to switch out a sound, but I find with like a "b" and "v", for example, you can make it sound more like one or the other. This is also just in my own experience, but I hope it helps!

I did- fooled myself and though I _did_ change pitch but it was volume.
@StevenKnightArrowood4 жыл бұрын
You can change the pitch if the s sound, but people generally (~99%) do not change the pitch of their s. The pitch of the s sound is mostly dependent on the shape of your mouth, while the pitch of your voice is dependent upon your vocal chords. When people change the pitch of their voice (via vocal chords) they generally do not change the way they form their mouth for the s sound, so the pitch of the s sound doesn't change even though the vocalized sounds do.
@benanon44294 жыл бұрын
yeah, but it wasn't natural, i wouldn't of had done that while actually singing
@timoheinrich87634 жыл бұрын
I'm a studied phonetician (though I don't think you need to be to understand this). Your /s/ is basically a noise that has more energy around 5-7k usually. (Compared to for example an /f/ that is pretty even throughout the spectrum.) Your ear won't hear any pitch in these sounds unless you maybe start to whistle while pronouncing it. Actually people do that especially with /ʃ/-sound like the last sound in 'wish'. So yeah, unless you whistle, your voiceless s's won't have a pitch that you could alter. Only thing you could do is to change the distribution of energy in the spectrum a little bit. But that's not to be confused with pitch.

@@MattDxstined What do you think and EQ is and can you explain specifically how they function?
@ChrisPFuchs4 жыл бұрын
@@MattDxstined De-Essers work in a different ways depending on the De-Esser. The standard De-Esser is a broadband compressor that's sidechained the frequencies where the Essing occurs, so the compressor only dips all the frequencies when there's a build up at that frequency. Then you have De-Essers that instead only dip at specific frequencies- some work like multiband compressor where one band is De-Essing, and others work like a dynamic EQ with one band set around the frequency you want to attenuate. The McDSP SA-2 is basically a multiband limiter where each band is set to a high frequency range ( Band 1: 3k Band 2: 6k Band 3: 9k Band 4: 12k). Oek Soothe is basically an adpative/automatic dynamic EQ that's trained to suppress resonant frequencies. My only point being there are a ton of different De-Essers that work pretty differently. It's good to have a bag of tricks for tackling different issues in my opinion (though I work mainly with dialogue, not so much music stuff.) I think what could be unique here is the detection algorithm- sometimes with De-Essers you get other parts of the dialogue/vocal that are effected by the De-Esser, when you may only want the actual S or T sounds to be attenuated.
@laurenpinschannels4 жыл бұрын
the airwindows de-esser is very good and uses an approach more like this - a custom detection algorithm and a targeted eq. it's also free. but it's just an effect vst where this is an editor.

There's 41 dislikes on this video atm. So either 41 people don't know what thumbs down means, or there are 41 people that are upset that they can't afford this software! I mean, I can't afford this software either but seeing what Melodyne 5 can do blows my mind! I've started using Vocaloid 5 recently to create vocals from "scratch", and although I've fallen in love with what Vocaloid can do, I always feel as though it's missing certain tools and functionality. Or at the very least, that its editing tools don't allow me quite the level of control which I am after. I was recommended this video, and I am soo glad I watched it! Melodyne 5 appears to have the EXACT tools I've been after to help get my Vocaloid tracks sounding even more realistic!
