Recording artists and engineers have known about Melodyne for years. For a long time, though, it was only monophonic vocal and instrumental parts that could benefit from Melodyne's much-admired editing algorithms: algorithms capable of everything from minor corrections of intonation to extreme pitch shifting and from the subtle modification of grooves to drastic time stretching.

What I like with Melodyne: Very easy to use, and you have a lot more control than with other pitch-correction software. What I don`t like about it: It destroys the high end frequencies of the recording. Don`t believe me. It really messes up the "air" of the recording. I have no interest in letting a program destroy the sound of my 8000$ vocal chain, because that sound is what the clients are paying for. So, is melodyne useless?? Absolutely not, I use it on EVERY project(unfortunately). The key when using melodyne (or any other signal-prossesor), is to use your ears, not your eyes. So, transfer the audio clip into melodyne, drink some coffee, close your eyes, push play, and then correct only the few notes that you HEAR is out of tune( If everything is out tune, tell the artist to go home and practice.). Because that change in sound quality only happens on the notes you`re correcting. So; if you can`t hear it, don`t fix it! The small artistic variations in pitch, tempo and dynamics is what makes real music, and real musicians. And on the opposite side of things; put everything in absolutely perfect pitch, absolutely perfect time and .....voila , you have the PERFECT recording... with NO HEART AND SOUL.

Music shouldn't be about computerized perfection, in my opinion. It removes the imperfect, intriguing human element and creates something sterile where natural talent, practice and effort is no longer required. Aretha Franklin, Pink Floyd, Jim Morrison and more didn't have or need Melodyne or Antares Autotune, and there's just something about raw human performance that I worry will be lost with the advent of technology like this.

That's not really accurate, because a "professional musician" would use this for transposition or changing tempo of a particular song, or adding really cool effects changing the tempo of particular pieces in a way that sounds realistic. Yes, it can be used to tune people's voices correctly, but it's not designed for that. Pitch correction isn't the big reason for Melodyne. There are actually better software to "set it and forget it". Melodyne really is designed to change the pitch or style of music so that you can do all kinds of really cool things with it creatively. Like, take a guitar, for example, and go crazy with the tune. The human voice does not morph well and ultimately comes out sounding weird. Again, that's the big problem with Hollywood electing crappy vocalists to do crappy music to sell to little kids, and they don't hire "talent", I'm gathering, because those of us with ability have expectations and often times refuse to sell out. They want little tools they can use to sell money. A real artist who isn't simply mass marketing can tell the record label to "fuck off" and change labels. If an artist is simply "autotune" and "sparkles", can they really leave? Not really.

Part 2, The ends don't justify means to me. That's just where we disagree. It's where society has come to really to. Cheating on anything is okay if the end result is what we want. I don't buy that. I feel integrity is needed. Using an affect that is clearly noticeable like chorus, reverb, etc. is different and not gutless like auto-tune and other performance correcting effects. That is the point I'm trying to tell you and others. You don't have to agree, but I'm just making myself clear.
@brianbf1986
@brianbf1986 12 жыл бұрын
Yes, your definition of ends justify means doesn't sit well with me and many examples found in history. I see your point, I really do. The reason why myself and others (although it seems that those numbers keep dwindling over the years) who do believe the means is important as the end result. If we're watching sports just for entertainment, why not allow them use steroids. Yes, I compare these particular effects (not all of them, I am a huge Floyd fan) to the use of steroids in sports.

Yes, the problem with me lies in the fact that a bedroom producer w/o vocal talent should remain a bedroom producer. The truth is, many people who use pitch perfecting plug-ins and other cutting-corner effects (like matching time effects for those instrumentalists who can't keep beat very well) are well-known acts receiving big paychecks for their top hits and not openly coming forward about using it. Songs with tuning should be well labeled for us music enthusiasts to clearly identify its use
@brianbf1986

Very true, I'm aware about Lennon and his many attempts to alter the sound of his voice said he was insecure of it. Manipulating the sound of your voice to sound significantly different and manipulating it to sound on pitch when you can't do it naturally, are two different thing. Granted, using it even as an effect is getting way overdone these days. The line between effect or pitch correction is blurred as well these days more and more.
@brianbf1986
@brianbf1986 12 жыл бұрын
I never insinuated that, both composition and talent in performances are very important. Many so-called artists are getting by with one or neither these days by using tools through plug-in effects on the computer. Some people have both, but whether they know it or not have tuning layered on their vocals.
@brianbf1986
@brianbf1986 12 жыл бұрын
Nope, never said that either. Funny how people jump to the all encompassing ideas from what I say. I'm not saying all use of plug-ins and effects are bad. I'm saying that those which truly deceive talent are despicable.
@brianbf1986
@brianbf1986 12 жыл бұрын
I agree, this is why if you can't sing, you pick up an instrument, compose music or use your musical talents in some other way. If you choose to sing, don't manipulate it electronically to be pitch perfect.

+hey you I'm a llama heh Nobody is going to publish an album without this, no matter how talented the singer is. It's just plain stupid to release an album to later find out the vocals are off pitch. Very few people are talented enough to sing pitch perfect on every single note throughout an entire song. Not within the first 50 takes at least. Even great musicians can be off pitch a lot.

I come from a background w/ a degree in music industry recording technology. It included both vocal lessons, performances, etc. as well as recording courses. I was in the studio as a producer/engineer on many recording projects. I understand the art and hard work that music production requires to create an awesome result. I spent countless hours behind a mixing board myself. I don't agree with engineers/producers taking over and creating false talent with studio wizardry by the click of a mouse.

I just tried the demo and it was a frustrating mess. It showed the pitches were incorrect on the simple piano piece that I used to demo it. It would not even open an mp3 file? I was wanting to use it to help transcribe pieces with for sessions, but it did not even place the correct pitches on the graph. The notation window was a clusterfuck of notes that were unrelated to what was being played. It's a nice concept but needs more work.

The Melodyne interface is good, and it's also good at building up a choir, but the results for solo voice are terrible. It created metallic artefacts and shaves off high frequencies, even without doing any editing!! I recorded a nice sounding, breathy vocal, loaded it into Melodyne, saved it as a 32-bit file and it was truly awful. If you want to sound fake, like on this video, then use Melodyne, but if you have higher standards, stay well clear.

this should be a core vst that comes with all digital workstations, audio - midi? that's some basic but incredibly useful stuff, we've always been doing this but by using transposition and stretching and it just seems obvious that this is the smart way of doing it. but i guess they're gonna rake it out as long as possible, keeping it a seperate piece of software to generate as much money as possible cuz that's what software companies do best...

1. This is a demonstration video, so of course the song is going to be simplistic. To have used a song with realistic complexities would have hidden the features being demonstrated in the sound field. 2. Of course you can do everything in your DAW or software. I can, and have been, doing everything in Cubase since I bought it 8 years ago. What differentiates this is the speed with which you can get the same results. I just bought it today, and I'm quite excited to start using it!

@iloveasdf Correction yes, quite true indeed, but contrary to popular belief it won't make you a perfect singer when you can't actually sing at all. For that you'd need seriously hardtuned effects, let alone what you'll need to do to the sound to get some vibratos going and then you'd notice the obvious tuning.

Ok. I may be confusing this software with the over-the-top pitch correction that we hear in some Kid Rock and oh-so-many rap songs. Most artists including the greats even MJ use some sort of tuning. For studio recordings its kind of crucial. They do it a very little bit just to make it 100% perfect, but they do it. Unlike artists today, it used to be used just to keep on key not to change the total sound of their voice.

This should be used for correction of errors. When you record vocals and you play it back. A good ear can tell which notes need to be corrected. With software such as this you can put in the correct note. However if you record vocals from someone who has a bad tone, tone deaf and just sounds horrible. How long is it going to take for you to edit? How long to recreate a good tone? After that if you do succeed I can bet it still sounds a lil weird. You can always tell what vocals are altered.

yeah, sure If the outcome is beautiful then it does not matter how it was created. If a lot of effort was put into making it, but this allows every 12 year old to be the next pop hit producer, without even knowing music theory, attending academic year or playing an instrument, he just uploads the song, rips the midi, upload to his most likely fruity loops daw & he's done, that does not sound very creative not complicated at the same time if you ask me
@brianbf1986

We can agree on that point, Tristan. Just because auto-tune/melodyne etc. is there doesn't mean there isn't any talent, true. But, these production tools slowly degrade what the talent mark is needed in a vocal performance. The bar essentially gets set lower because even if you can sing, someone who can't will be able to sound on pitch like you through its use. They won't have the phrasing, composition, etc. of you, but they'll have pitch covered. This is what for me, as a musician, is sad.
@tristancalvaire
@tristancalvaire 12 жыл бұрын
Yet, one can't presume that simply because one artificially pitched their voice that they are talentless. Some amazing pieces of vocal music have come from those who cannot sing, yet used their own voices as a starting timbre for a computer-controlled melody. Take a listen to Infected Mushroom's cover of The Pretenders, and tell me that's not music. Yet, they have quite pitchy, imperfect singing voices au naturale. Even in the pop world, a Gaga clearly has more talent than a Ke$ha.
@tristancalvaire
@tristancalvaire 12 жыл бұрын
Does it matter if the end result sounds good? Who's more important- Beethoven, or a violinist in his orchestra? Performance is not music's goal. Creation of timbres to inspire emotion is the music's purpose. Does it matter if the sound was created by the strum of a guitar or a sampler? "When you use a sampler, nobody plays on it, so the problem of the ego of the musician is not really there. For everything that we do, no matter how you get to the results, the important thing is the result."
@tristancalvaire
@tristancalvaire 12 жыл бұрын
Ah, so any musician who uses any sort-of plug-in is a fraud. Not that we have genres of music in spectrums from rock to rap to dance to metal to electronic-orchestral music entirely focused on timbre experiments through plug-ins and synthesis, or anything. You know how it's usually the singer who gets accredited for a song, even if the talent lies in the music itself? Melodyne gives the bedroom producer the capability to use their own voice for their work, even if they aren't a vocalist.

Part 2. Sometimes there's really Good producers and they might be a decent singer but they have skills to make themselves sound amazingly well. And to me it's not about are you being technically true. No one cares about that. All people care about is how the music moves them and does it sound good. If you can create that then (you are) a musician and artist just as much as anyone els, though you might go about it in a little bit of a different way. It's still the same creative process. Peace. :)
@TheFlatEarthChannelDome
@TheFlatEarthChannelDome 12 жыл бұрын
I use to think that too. Then i realized.. just because someone can't necessarily sing very well, doesn't mean they don't have a good ear to recognize and create music that might be better constructed then anyone els out there or any (real) artist as you say. I mean usually you're not going to be someone who sounds like a dying cat when you sing but still. People who (make) music, I.e. produce it are more artist in my eyes then just a kid who sings only.

The process begins with your voice, the environment, your performance and then the way your voice is recorded, e.g. preamp or not. Melodyne receives and interprets what it hears and allows the user to edit the information it finds. The software development wasn't based upon a 'type' of music, it was based upon soundwaves. It then presents the waves (blobs) for editing to whatever degree. It doesn't 'kill' upper frequencies. Making a voice sound 'airy' isn't a melodyne function.

@rta5000 In fact, sometimes i'm not super proud of my generation. I'm not deeply ashamed, but I don't always feel like we're as talented as the previous ones. BUT then I think of those who actually have talent and who don't need to cheat to have talent and I feel a little better about it. Besides, you don't need to take it as a tool for untalented people to have success, you can see it as something to have fun with at home if you're not a really good singer.

@itsmrGuy You need to relax mate...obviously it's up to the listener (us) to determine what real talent is or isn't. This sort of software can be incredibly useful even with the most skilled of vocalists. Melodyne and other similar software being used to create "instant hits" annoys me as well... but in the right hands it can also be invaluable. 'Disgusting software' is going a bit far

All the computer has to simulate now is soul and people are no longer necessary. Midi made it so you don't have to know how to play, now you don't have to be able to sing. Soulless music for a soulless audience, how appropriate is this? Sometimes the flaws and mistakes are what constitute the character and intent of the track. Take Neil Young for example. Why not just play this stuff to other computer's for their enjoyment?

Hey, Ive got nothing against Michael Jackson, but I feel that MJ was more of a performing artist than a musician in my opinion. I don't think I have ever seen him play an instrument on stage. It is true you can write melodies with basic understanding of chords on a piano etc. So much help would needed to expand and actually record the songs. How can the producer who cant record the songs themselves tell the musicians how to- If they cant even play it? the producer is a guide emphasizing emotions

I don't see why this takes away the real talent? Music is so much more than just singing ... Why are people so narrow minded in their thinking? Sure, I agree that auto-tune has become a far too big aspect of the music industry today, but I just try to stay away from that crappy music. Use the time wallowing to compose some amazing music instead, cause that's what I'm gonna do now. (:

@daffy1409 So here'as what to do. Listen to great singers as much as possible. Practice practice practice. and above all, let it come from the heart. A lesson or two might help, but if you are that far away without them, they wont help much. Have a vision and work hard to realize that vision. OR buy Melodyne!!!:) Just kidding. It may help with poor pitch but no computer program can substitute the need for a great idea. Nor can they teach that at school. Its in you or its not.

@jonnnyclear Good point, but what is scary is, things like this make it easier for real talented performers to be replaced with more children of rich Disney executives to completely drain out the last remaining vestigises of human expression in pop entertainment. The saving grace is that since so much music is being downloaded for free, the only chance musicians have is to make money with their live performances. So we're good untill they get this to work in real time.

@PoLaRIV if you're seruious about music, you may not need Melodyne because you can do your job as a musician. But it can make the engineer look like a real hero to the less talented musician. Nothing wrong with that:) It could be cool to save an otherwise great take with a problem note. But if the musician gois in needing Melodyne, Maybe they just arent ready for the studio yet. A nice thing for the toolbox anyway.

"The warrior says yea to it all" Nobody is trying to replace anyone. Unless of course you are replaceable. I am getting one cause I can't sing but I love to sing. Its just for me. I can play piano though and this will be a fun addition to my hobby. Also it will give me a chance to hear a model of what I can aspire to with intonation. Kind of a bio feedback. All this new stuff is so much fun...bring it on.

I tried this plugin and it will not make a lousy singer sing great in a natural way (which is a good thing!) But it can help correcting and also composing, because you can try diferent notes on the vocal sample etc. export to midi etc.. Also, you can try extreme effects. Even with limitations this is a powerfull tool. I do think the plugin interface really sucks and its very amateur (why cant the window be resized in protools!?)

Well, I agree. I've done compression many times, but that's, like you said, to raise the floor and lower the ceiling. Haven't done alot of reverb, though. I don't even have a problem with Medolyne or Auto-Tune if it's used just to correct pitch. What I have a strong problem with is when these functions are abused and turned into effects rather than just too correct and clean up. Maybe I'm just too old school in my approach. I still find an artist's true voice more soulful than a synthed voice.

'Your comparing things like, Painting and computer graphics. It's the same type of outcome" Actually no. There's a huge difference between performance arts (music, theater, poetry, dance...) and the other ones (sculpture, animation, painting...). So as you can see how I called them... there's a *performance* intrinsic to it (music for now). So recording is just recording. That's why every big label is whining now. They want to keep the fake thought that music = cd/dvd market. And you go for it

well in this case I'd suggest it's all still paint, but we can add different stuff to it and get the paint to do different things unable with just a normal brush. It's still painting, but with a future brush. When you mix paint with melodyne you gain complete control of where the paint goes. and crykoda has a good point. I'd say performance art isn't really anything to do with music or the sound... it's a shell. "Just recording" is an inaccurate and idiotic statement at best...
