Some fun info. The Hoover Dam’s base required 230 blocks of concrete, each block five feet in height. Widths of the blocks varied from 25 square feet to 60 square feet depending on the blocks’ location. Columns of blocks were linked in alternating and interconnecting arrangements. The Hoover Dam concrete would cure in 125 years by conventional or natural methods. Crews, however, used some innovative engineering methods to hasten the process. Nearly 600 miles of steel pipes woven through the concrete blocks significantly reduced the chemical heat from the setting for the concrete. Crews relied on 1,000-pound blocks of ice produced daily at the site’s ammonia-refrigeration plant. The pipes that were used to cool the large blocks were later filled with concrete for additional strength. With its 80-year-old technologies and construction methods, the Hoover Dam maintains water-pressure levels of up to 45,000 pounds per square inch. The project uses engineering and physics concepts known as arch-gravity and gravity dam, meaning some of the force of the Colorado River water is redirected upstream or against canyon walls. Simply put, the arch-gravity Hoover Dam curves upstream to direct water pressure outward and against the canyon walls.

The crazy thing about this is they have the potential to create dams like this. The thing holding them back is not the money but the will to prevail. That is what helped so many marvels of that era to be created. The iron will to battle on and finish no matter what it takes. That dam stands now as a symbol of that struggle and for generations on it will stand as a symbol from one generation to the next.

Thank you for your comment! You're absolutely right. Tribal people may have a different sphere of knowledge, but that doesn't make them ignorant. In fact, many indigenous communities have a deep understanding of their natural surroundings, including rivers, water systems, and even dams. Their perspective and knowledge can offer valuable insights and should be respected. showing them this video to capture their first time reactions to the magnificence of the Hoover Dam, showcasing the diverse ways people appreciate and interact with engineering marvels like this

Aziz is right; lots of steel. Lots and *lots* of dynamite was used to shape the land to build the dam, other buildings, and roads. My area of the country has dams all over the place, because many of our rivers flow through mountainous areas and provide electricity as well as irrigation and flood control. So I've seen many dams, but Hoover was the biggest. We saw it on a two week driving trip when I was 14. I'm glad I was old enough to really remember it. You feel like a tiny ant looking at it. I hope your government can work properly to save your country from floods and drought. Climate change is desperate enough without politicians faffing around. On that subject, ours aren't doing that well either. 😥

It's a remarkable sight. It's huge! It was built not only for water management and power but also to provide work for a lot of men work right after the great depression. Unfortunately they flooded tons of ancient ruins when they did it. Back in the day they had little or no respect, or interest, in those sites. Now they're lost forever. Too bad. It's a remarkable feat of engineering however. The views are astoundingly beautiful. Adhering to laws is a core principle of our society. We directly elect representatives to make and change laws in the local state and national levels. Regulations we're less impressed with and require close oversight or unelected officials who create regulations get confused and think they're lawmakers, overstepping authority. We're having a problem with various government agencies creating regulations that conflict with the authorities granted to them by legislators. Over regulating is a good way to hack up a good thing. They try to relate you to death without close oversight,c even try to remove constituents rights but by bit. I'm not a fan of regulators in general if you can't tell lol. They're unelected and often unaccountable.

This video does not show the width at the bottom of the dam. It is true that we have rules and laws, but mostly we have the benefit of European civilization which developed our schools. Their history was the history of the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans and all the nations before. That history included the wonders, constructions and inventions of those ages. Rules are not always followed. As with any beauty or greatness, there comes jealousy and envy which leads to assaults of one kind or another. Worse than paper litter, we have people who have tried to live without rules and they are now suffering addictions without homes. Others have lost their jobs with automation and tecnhology advancements. Progress comes at a high price and should be carefully considered. One can only store water if one gives up the land and God provides the rain. Morality comes before legal rules.

*May I say, first, that you both are very well spoken, and I am very impressed how you fully appreciate all aspects of things. Also, the gentleman on the right has the most gorgeous eyes! I lived in Arizona for 32 years, and have been here to the dam, on vacations camping at Lake Powell. Nevada and Arizona share this, as Arizona and California share the Colorado River, which separates the two states. Above the dam, there are catfish and carp that reach 5 feet and over! Unfortunately, anything that dies or drowns is carried eventually towards the dam, due to the water pull. The bodies get caught in the grating at the dam, and the fish grow huge eating that. That's why divers looking for recovering a human body, get in as fast as possible, so they aren't eaten. This dam not only harnesses water, but also produces electricity from the power of the water! Just know that currently, America is also going through a phase of seriously corrupt officials and as true Americans do, those of us fighting to remove them from office is still ongoing with that fight. Yes, we are a stubborn bunch, but also very creative. I wish we could all work together for all of us instead of the wealth lying with the few, and those few are greedy and stingy.*

We visited the dam several years ago and took the full tour. It was an incredible experience. I had no problem with the heights when we were up top, but I did not like the underground part of the tour. The entire time we were down below, all I could think about was the whole thing coming crashing down around us! I think I've watched too many disaster movies! 😂 Yes... I always cringe when I hear Naveed speak about the US and his belief that we have no corruption or that everyone here is a law-abiding citizen or pillar of their community. We certainly do have our problems, but like you, I believe we have the strength to overcome them, with the right people and a lot of faith. Oh, and I agree. Aren't Aziz's eyes gorgeous? What a stunning man!
