The woman in background is a “caller”. She is telling the 4 couples which dance steps they are going to do. Naveed is correct, a lot American dance is based on Irish dancing.

I did this in school. It was a lot of fun to get out of class and move around. Folk dancing like this is descended from dances brought over by Irish immigrants, so that's probably why it reminded you of an Irish dance.

I hated that square dance, and believe it or not, I was glad when I ended up with a sprained ankle so I couldn't dance

@@carolgrosklags8933 I was so glad to get out of that stuffy, boring classroom, I would have cleaned toilets. Luckily, I've always loved to dance, too.

Square dancing was the only P.E. activity I really liked. It was never as complicated as what this was. No one was lifted.

To Naveed and Auntie Sonia...those were spoons the men were using to create that noise. This is great!

I learned to square dance at age 10 or 11, but I haven't done it in years... decades even. My favorite was the Virginia Reel. I'm so happy Auntie Sobia enjoyed this so much! 💖

This was a very popular dance in the 1900's. It was a country folk dance. I was brought over from Europe as early a the 17th century. We don't really see much of this today in the US. Mostly popular in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. There is also dance clubs for square dancing in other state. I was shocked to find out there are square dancing clubs in Oregon, the state I live in. So watching this made me look up information. It was fun. Thanks.

Seeing this reminds me of the Westward Expansion era. Many people would come and they brought their dancing, music and songs.

Up until WW2, this is how young men and women in rural areas would meet. There is a person yelling out what dance move is next and he is the "caller". The "caller" would make sure everyone danced with everyone else and some couples were made. Autos ended that. Please show them this video: "US Navy Presidential Ceremonial Honor Guard at Norway". I was part of this detachment in 1981-'82.

My parents met at a barn dance in the late 1930s. Mom didn't like Dad much at first, thought he was too full of himself, but she said he was the best dancer in 3 counties, so she "tolerated" him until they fell in love. 😊

Oh, I always love seeing them enjoy different things from different cultures! ❤ As an American, for me square dance is just something so commonplace that it's easy to forget it is a folk tradition, and it's nice to see others from different countries and cultures actually enjoy it! Also a kudos to the young people in the video actually doing the dancing - they are extremely talented square dancers!

Actually, although it is not really connected to the channel's content, I would love to see a video where Naveed and Auntie Sobia watch a video of a dance from their culture, and then introduce us viewers to it!

Square dancing and clogging come from areas in rhe US settled by Scottish, Irish, and English people so they resemble traditional dances from those areas. That's why it looked familiar. Clogging is even more like Irish dancing. When I first saw Riverdance, I said, "Hey, that's clogging!"

We all learn this in our "gym" (physical education, taught in the gymnasium) class in middle (between elementary and high) school. Up until then, girls and boys had separate physical education classes.

Fun. This is dancing for an audience exhibition. It would be great to show this sort of dancing on a more personal level. Try David Hoffman's documetary videos from the 1960s, specifically "The Best Bluegrass Clog Dancing Video Ever" which features multi-generational local country folk gathered at the house of Mr. Bascum Lunsford, dancing in the real traditional fashion. His other videos on Appalachia, bluegress, music and dancing show aspects of American country life that are seldom seen.

Living in Washington State I had to Square Dance between 4th and 6th grade because my 4th grade teacher belonged to a Square Dance Association . He convinced the school to get everyone involved . Maybe this is where I learned not to like country music being forced to dance. Granted there is some country I like but not much .

Here in California we had to learn square dancing in school too. I liked it because we did it instead of calistenics. I feel the same as you about country music, just some Johnny Cash, that's it.

Imagine being prohibited from dancing with men. This is not natural for the human species to do this. This is not something that should stop the creativity and expression of humans. Dancing brings joy, just like singing.

When these dances originated, it would not have been so intimate. It would’ve been much more simple, with much more separation of the sexes. It was kind of a courting ritual, but under direct observation of the elders. This portrayal reflects societal changes that have much looser, moral values.
