If you can't understand the opening CG, you can think of it as:The Heavenly Court is like the CIA, and the monkey used to be a former mob boss. His mission to "go legit" involves delivering an important NPC to pick up some crucial items. After the job's done, they promise the monkey a spot in the system, but along the way, the monkey takes out quite a few of his old mob buddies. In the end, the monkey decides he doesn't want the spot anymore and just wants to retire to the mountains. The CIA, though, plans to kill him to tie up loose ends.

A 500 year old rematch between Sun WuKong and Erlang Shen? Epic, dare I say. This is the scene I have watched since I was a kid where the Monkey King challenged the heavens and almost won.

Mostly because of his rebellious acts and he never listen to the gods so easily. I learned Wukong is Immortal- 1) He learn and achieved the secrets of immortality via Daoist practices; 2) He travels to the underworld and wiping his name from the ledgers of life and death in hell; 3) He was tasked to guard the immortal peaches in heaven but ends up eating them; 4) He crashes into a god and drinking their immortal wine in heaven; 5) He is eating Laozi's immortal elixir or Sallowed the pills of immortality; 6) The Gods are sick of him and throw into a furnace but burns his mortality; and 7) He is eating Ginseng baby fruit.

They had their first fight in the first chapters of the novel Journey to the West, and yeah, Erlang had a ton of help, just not from Buddha -He had Lao Tse mirror, which basically made Wukong transformations useless -They were fighting while surrounded by a Cosmic Net which basically made any escape tactics useless -Erlang also had the help of his brothers -Guanyin, a Bodhisattva (somewhat close to the power of a Buddha) helped Erlang mid fight -At the end Wukong didn't even straight up loose, just threw the fight after seeing how his army of monkeys got captured

It's a recurrent fact in the novel that Wukong wins his battles by outclassing his opponent's stamina Wukong started fleeing from Erlang after his army of monkeys got captured, he didn't flee bc he was being outclassed, but bc he became depressed. You must also take into account that Erlang had a lot of external help: -Lao Tse's mirror to see through Wukong's transformation -Boddhisattva Guanyin knocking Wukong down -His brothers and dog holding Wukong down so he couldn't transform anymore -The cosmic net which cut any escape routes I'm not saying Wukong would absolutely stomp Erlang, if anything, he would end up winning only bc of his endurance and ridiculous stamina

Chinese friends, this game has given us westerners a breath of fresh air, the story is magnificent, i dont care what people say, this is feature complete, you gave us a masterpiece, loved and enjoyed to the max. long time since we get this level. Game Science showed what a AAA game is and has been missing. I cant wait for the DLC, my 6 year old was watching next to me, i had to buy the books and star reading her the story (yes im acting the characters for her) this came before LOTR for her, i never read the books so doing this for her is an experience i cant wait every nigh for her!

I think one of the best parts about this scene lies in the spoilers of it that might make it amazing Basically, this was all pre planned by Sun Wukong, Erlang Shen, and Erlang's sworn brothers, along with others. The headband that gets Wukong defeated in this fight, and the defeat itself, was a key component. The plan was to have Wukong challenge the Heavens and the Celestial Court, and have Erlang Shen duel him. The end result would involve the axe Erlang Shen used destroying the mountain, which imprisoned his sister, though I forget the details of him imprisoning her plus why he'd want to free her. The other result would be Wukong's death; the headband could not be removed without effectively reincarnating, but because Wukong wiped his name from the ledgers of life and death, he was immortal, and thus could not reincarnate. So by Erlang Shen killing him in that battle, he'd split himself into the Six Senses, and everyone involved in the plan would wait for a "Destined One", who'd basically become Wukong but minus the headband, freeing him. The sworn brothers of Erlang would be encountered on the journey; the Whiteclad Noble, the Yellow-robed Squire, the Green-capped Martialist, the Venom Daoist, and the Pale-axe Stalwart. It's a really cool interpretation someone had, and it fits, especially given Erlang Shen's disposition when encountered later on. It's all a super convoluted plan to get Wukong free, and Erlang agreed to it because of feeling remorse for killing all the monkeys on the mountain.

Wukong has a Tightening Spell on his head, which was placed there long ago by the Buddha and cannot be removed. Only a few Bodhisattvas know the incantation for it. When the spell is activated, he experiences great pain

Pretty sure he didn't take it away, he did the complete opposite. He made it appear and used it. The headband wasn't visible on wukong's head until that moment.

I am betting it was because he was about to selfishly bring a fight between immortals to the mortal realm where it would cause cataclysmic destruction. Looks like he then had to spend the previous 500 year sentence that was commuted for helping Tang Monk before being reincarnated.

The opening match of Wukong vs Erlang Shen made me very disappointed when I didn't get to see the scene of the heavenly army beating drums and blowing trumpets to show their strength, along with the cheers of the army cheering for their general when fighting, this created a very epic scene like in the feudal war movies or the Three Kingdoms movie that I have watched, in the game, the army just stood still and lifeless before being blown away by the power of Wukong and Yang Jian, they are not the main characters, but don't make them so bad and weak, it is an insult to the heavenly army, I am Vietnamese and like many Asians who watch other Chinese movies and myths, I feel that is a huge minus point, it makes me not feel completely innocent when playing the game, I am always on guard that I might be fooled by a certain part in the game. The game graphics of the forest scenes are excellent, in my opinion, real filmmakers should be invited to advise the game developers on the details of the game's story background, this is just a suggestion, for a first Chinese blockbuster game, you guys can definitely do better. Anyway, congratulations, there are many Asian myths waiting to be shown.
