Are you Afraid to Wear Wigs? How I overcame it.

In 4 days I turn 50 years old. My hair is bright white in front and silver/black in the back. I am a Teacher's Aide and about to return to school. I suffer with eczema on my head all my life but this last decade has been worse leaving me with scabs and a red inflamed scalp and super thin hair that is continuing to fall out. I came looking for hair cuts to hide but now, I believe I will walk into one of our local wig shops and see what they can tell me. Your video may have just changed my world. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing this message, Mel - so very encouraging for those who are new to the wig world. I confess, started out thinking about all the negative "what ifs", but have come to realize that even with the purchases that didn't work out, there was something to learn from each of them, and they helped me to narrow down what will work for me, and what won't when it comes to future purchases. The styling practice on the budget wigs I have bought has made it so much easier to find the right wigs with higher price points. When I'm considering a wig now, I have a better understanding of what is possible.

I saw your recent review on a relatively inexpensive Wig Company wig. It looked amazing and I have been wearing wigs for 17 years. I find frankly wigs look best when they are a bit 'messy.' A 2500 wig looks 'wiggy' if it is too perfect. And your confidence makes a huge difference too.

Yep, that's exactly what I did! Hey, I wear inexpensive wigs at home and to practice styling, cutting them. Currently, wear toppers, wigs at all prices. I did wig outings slowly, afterwhile I didn't care what others thought....I love everything about the journey, I chose to embrace it lifes too short❤ Thank you for this video...your loving messages could only be helpful and welcomed!

I am 77 , my hair is very thin and fine. I had to take letrsole after I had a double mastectomy. My friend worked at a pharmacy and told me that it was a form of chemo. My hair is so thin you can see my scalp. I also have a very high fore head. Hair recedes back on both sides. I would like to have a wig like the ones you tried on. I would have to have a budget one. You are so pretty you would look good with a mop on your head. I feel the same way you feel, I am a widow and wonder why I would want a wig. Mel, this is very good of you and it resonates with me. I got my first wig ten years ago because my hair was slowly thinning, getting gray, and frizzier. I bought Scorpio from Revlon, at the time. It was about $200 and it looked like my own hair, to me. I have since passed that one on and invested in better quality wigs. I am not sorry, even though I have bought some mistakes (that I gave away, rather than return). I now prefer human hair wigs from Gardeaux -- excellent quality and realism. But not everyone can afford that and there are excellent synthetics from Jon Renau and Raquel Welch, Ellen Wille and Henry Margu that look beautiful and will last if taken care of. I have all my good synthetics along with my human hair collection and they give me options. I consider them to be valuable assets like jewelry, shoes and handbags. No one should feel embarrassed by wearing wigs -- they are enhancements and all women deserve to look as good as possible. 😘

I am trying to get the confidence to wear a wig. It just seems once I have tried one on, I do not feel myself because I just want my natural hair even though it wasn't the best, make sense? Susan, I know exactly what you mean when I first started wearing wigs my first couple, it felt so alien to me and so strange and I understand that feeling. I wanted my hair. I wanted my hair to look the way that it used to look and as my hair just became worse and worse I lost all confidence to go out to be with people to socialize in my bio hair, so my first wigs gave me confidence and it started feeling good and I started getting such great responses that it helped me go back out and be more active again and more socialize. so I wish you the courage to be brave and go out And try and when it doesn’t feel right the first one or two try again and you’re right the best of the best are great but start with what is affordable in case it’s not exactly the perfect one and you need to find the one that you love. that happens. No wig I have bought online has fit my head right..SoI had to eat the cost of some of the wigs..so my advice is dont buy unless you go to wig shop and try on multiple..There needs to be more wig shops in every city

That would be nice. In this big world, most women live in small towns, and travel is not an option (budget is everything). Online helps many of us have access and major discounts! I often share about knowing your measurements and pick the correct wig size and manufacturer. Call the online customer service to get consultation as well.

I am now 3 months into my wig journey and I'm not comfortable. I've not gotten one compliment that my hair looks great. Not like I need to have a compliment every day but people have told me that I will get compliments because I have beautiful hair, so it's just disappointing because it hasn't happened. It doesn't help that I only wear wigs about 3 days a week for a couple of hours. I'm retired and I don't go out all that often, just to do errands and doctor's appointments. If I were still a working girl I would maybe be long over this phobia that I have that everything on my head looks like a wig. I'm still pretty positive that it does, and no one is saying anything because they don't want to lie.😢

I think most people just are so busy worrying about their own insecurities and problems they aren’t really looking. What’s important is you! How do you feel in it! Do you feel more confidence? Are you less insecure because people can’t see your real hair? Before wigs, I wouldn’t leave the house. I still won’t wear my bio hair outside. My pink scalp is too visible. Now I feel good and that’s what’s important! Also try washing the wig, airdrying on a wig stand and combing and trying different looks and styles. Finding what makes it you! Then put on a lipstick and when people look your way smile 😊. That’s what people really see❣️❣️❣️

Remember, put it on! Don’t be scared to try to style with fingers or wide tooth comb. Shake it out, tuck behind the ear, try clips or headbands. Change it up and make it conform to how you like it best!.

I just bought my first wig. The saleswoman in the wig shop said essentially I don't have a round head and none of the wig caps or wig bands would stay in place. They slipped upwards. Now that I am putting the wig on myself, the whole wig seems to slip upwards. What can I do?

Do you have any bio hair in the nape? I find that sewing a Comb in the nape keeps it more secure. If no hair at nape, the Comb can slip under the wig cap. Also, using wig tape at nape might help. Roll on wig glue as well. Those ate some different suggestions. You can using clips or Bobby pin in back where it is slipping under the hair and clipping the wefts to your bio hair.

I understand that it bothers someone that his hair is thinning in old age and that he wants to wear a wig, if it helps him that's fine.
