This was my first time melting copper. I melted copper pipe and wire and made an ingot. I've melted aluminum before but copper requires a lot more heat so I was a little nervous. The heat was intense but it was worth it. The molten copper looks like pure gold lava. It's mesmerizing. Copper is heavier than it looks and I love feeling the weight of the copper bar in my hand. I'll try this again.

Nice job! Good looking ingot! Mind sharing where the ingot molds w/ handles came from? Thanks, Jim

Thank you. I bought the molds from Amazon. They are 2000g graphite molds from some generic brand. OTOOLWORLD I think? The handles are also removable.

I like the safety gear, where did you purchase and how much? You need a new lifter, it would be a safety disaster if the crucible sidewall gave way!
@maverickmeteor

The gear is from local stores and Amazon. I wear full leather, a face shield, and a respirator with filters rated for this sort of thing. I dont recall all the prices. Id say around ~$250 for everything. The gloves are for TIG welding because I like the dexterity, but cheaper gloves are available. You're right about the lifter. I designed and built the pouring tongs to be a lifter/tong combo but unfortunately the inner diameter of the furnace is too small. I suppose a smaller crucible size would also work.

Also there's filtered camera lenses that can cut down the ir glare just gotta Google for your specific camera.

@@maverickmeteor right on. Prices vary wildly as does filtration quality so I'd recommend some reviews research if you get to that point. How you liking the devil forge? Worth it to buy? I want one but I'm not sure if it's worth it

@@joshschneider9766 I like the furnace but I'm not sure I've used it enough yet to offer a useful opinion. So far, so good.

how long does a melt like that takes and how much propane does it burns?
@maverickmeteor
@maverickmeteor 11 ай бұрын
It took about 35 minutes from the time I lit the furnace to pouring. This is a small furnace with good insulation. A larger furnace might take longer. I did not track how much propane was used.

so how much propane was used to get $6 worth of copper
@maverickmeteor
@maverickmeteor Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how much propane was used but that's a good question. I'll test it some time. The value of the copper depends on what's done with it. Scrapping is one way to go and has standard values by weight. Another option is to make it into something useful or beautiful that could be much more valuable.

You got some nice equipment. But you gotta coat that kaowool. Little fibers are blasted off each firing. Makes me want to go all clay since it fires at a very high temp. And i can find it for free.

Pourquoi fondre métaux aux gaz?? Depuis l'Antiquité toute civilisation ont fondu et forgé avec charbon, de plus il faut en fondre des quantités pour rentabiliser la forge et gaz 💥👍
@maverickmeteor
@maverickmeteor Жыл бұрын
Le gaz est plus propre que le charbon et plus facile à contrôler. Je ne vends pas mon métal au prix de la ferraille, donc je ne m'inquiète pas du prix de l'essence. Merci pour votre question !
